Question: From the admin NIF I changed a server to be hidden, using
the Config -> Server Options, but the server did not appear to be hidden
for several minutes and the Srvhidden parameter in LANMAN.INI was still set
to No. Also, once the server was manually stopped and restarted or rebooted
the server was no longer hidden. Why is this?

Answer: Servers announce themselves periodically (the frequency is
controlled by the server's LANMAN.INI parameter SRVANNOUNCE=). They announce
their name and Srvcomment. Workstations cache this information, and when you
attempt a NET VIEW (or use the NIF View Network Servers) all you really
do is retrieve and display this previously cached information. This
information can be aged out of the workstation cache, but it takes a little
while (2.5 times the period, or 2.5 minutes by default).

All of the configuration changes you make through the NIF are temporary; the
NIF does not actually change the LANMAN.INI file. This is very handy for
testing purposes; once you are pleased with a configuration you can then
make the corresponding changes in LANMAN.INI, then stop and restart the
service so the changes will take effect.
