If you get the error message "Other Operation in Progress," note where
it occurs and check the following cases for possible solutions.

* At server initialization: Wait five minutes after booting the
server before trying a backup operation.

* In CIOSYS data area: Make sure there is at least 4 KB of space
free in the CIOSYS data area for backup to run properly.

* Threads: Make sure the threads are set correctly--10 for a
3S/40x and 7 for a 3S/20x.

* Transmit and receive buffers: receive buffers should be 80% of
the transmit buffers; for example, 24 receive buffers and 30
transmit buffers.

* EMS for CIOSYS: For a 3Server386 there must be 64 KB of EMS left for
CIOSYS. For a 3Server3 there must be 34 KB of EMS left for CIOSYS.

* Message buffers must be at least one greater than the number of
concurrent requests. You may want to add a few more, because the
tape server is also sending read/write requests to the server.

* Concurrent requests specify the maximum number of file or print
service operations this server can handle at one time. Tape
backup and restore initiate file operations (either remote or
locally) and provisions should be made for their use.

* The -b parameter is affected by the -h parameter: The -h (hold back)
parameter specifies the number of the -b buffers to reserve for
use by services installed on the same server. When services on
the same server need to communicate with each other (such as
3+Route, 3+Mail, 3+Name, 3+Netconnect, and 3+Share) they use
hold-back buffers for their communications. Increase the -b
parameter by 6.

* The -h parameter in the ETH.SYS: The tape service makes a call to
the file service on the same server to do a backup of that
server. Increase the -h parameter by 6.

* Tape in drive: If a tape is in the drive while booting,
sometimes an error will occur. (If you do a DIR /F you will not
get a listing and then you cannot do anything else because of the
other operation in progress.) Put the tape in the drive after
the server has finished initializing.

* The controller on the tape unit may erroneously think it has
another operation in progress. Reboot the server, or copy the
TAPE.SYS or TDRIVE.SYS back onto the server if rebooting doesn't
solve the problem.
