Tape Log Files

When backing up to an Exabyte 2.3 GB tape drive, keep in mind
that log files for a full tape require large amounts of disk
space.

The 3+Backup TAPE_LOG file will require at least 2 MB on drive C
of the backup server if created for a tape containing a full 2.3
GB of backed up data. The five BACK_LOG files and five REST_LOG
files together may require an additional 2 MB on the same drive.

If 3+Backup encounters insufficient disk space for the log files
during a backup or restore operation, it will complete the
operation but truncate the log files.

See "3+Backup" in the 3+ Administrator's Guide, Volume 1 for
details on the TAPE_LOG, BACK_LOG, and REST_LOG files.

Cleaning the 2.3 GB Drive Heads

Because the Exabyte 2.3 GB tape drive packs data very densely on
the backup tape, you must maintain clean drive tape heads for
high reliability. Clean the heads once for every 30 hours of
tape use or for every 30 GB of data backed up or restored.

Resetting the 2.3 GB Drive

Dirty heads or a worn cassette in the 2.3 GB Exabyte tape drive
may occasionally cause the drive to stop the backup, eject the
backup tape, and reject all subsequent tapes that you attempt to
insert.

If this happens, look at the monitor lights beneath the tape
slot. If neither light is on, call your network supplier. If
the amber light is on and the green light is off, press the eject
button underneath the tape slot to reset the drive.

At this point, if the Exabyte drive heads are due for a cleaning
(see "Cleaning the 2.3 GB Drive Heads," above) insert the Exabyte
head-cleaning cassette; otherwise, insert the tape cassette one
more time.

If the tape cassette is rejected again, press the eject button
again and insert a different tape cassette. If the new cassette
is rejected, contact your network supplier.
