BACKING UP MACINTOSH FILES

Macintosh files are implemented as two DOS files and one data file.

Off-line backup can be used to back up 3+ for Macintosh servers.

On-line backup makes an extra effort to back up Macintosh database
files. However, for best results, perform backups during light or no
user activity, to reduce the possibility of files being open and thus
not backed up.

If Backup occurs on Home folders to which users are actively switch
launched, key files in the system folder will not be backed up, but will
be noted in the backup log as an access error. When performing subsequent
restore of such a backup, new Macintosh system files may have to be
provided. Save a copy of the system file (containing extra fonts and
DAs) elsewhere in your home folder as a backup, or have extra copies of
all of your fonts and DAs easily accessible.

RESTORING MACINTOSH FILES

Macintosh information may only be restored as low as the directory
level, and only to empty directories. You cannot restore a Macintosh
file using the PC backup interface.

Extra code was added to on-line restore to reduce the likelihood of
data loss for users that mistakenly restore over existing, non-empty
Macintosh directories.

Off-line restore was not changed and there is a much higher chance of
data loss in such circumstances.

VIEWING BACKUP AND RESTORE LOG FILES

Backup and restore log files now display Macintosh file and folder names
and the DOS files and directories to which they correspond. Note
that the Macintosh names appear in the log files with the Macintosh
extended ASCII character codes. View the file from a Macintosh text
editor to see the correct characters as a Macintosh client would see
them. In most cases, viewing the log file from a PC will show no
differences.

SETTING UP A BACKUP SERVER

Allow 512 KB of disk space on partition C: of the tape server for
temporary files required by the Macintosh restore facility to make
copies of MACDIR files to be merged.

Allow enough space for multiple log files. As disk capacities of 3Com
servers increase, 3+ log files will become immense. For example, backup
log files for Macintosh servers with 130-275 MB of data backed up vary
from 1-1.3 MB in size, depending on the number and size of the files.

Check backup and restore log files for error and warning messages.
Fast scanning without opening the files can be done with a utility like
GREP, searching for the "!!"
