The following pages show the configurations of the 3C501 and the
3C505 EtherLink cards.  When you have set the EtherLink cards,
test the configuration and cables.

The EtherLink II card has menu-driven diagnostics and is self
explanatory.  Setting up the base I/O on an EtherLink II card is
also self explanatory; find the jumpers (shunts) on the card and
move the jumper to the desired setting.


Echo Server Test

Use the Echo Server Test for testing network cables such as thin
Ethernet, because it is less forgiving of cable problems than
normal usage with 3Plus.  It is especially useful when the tester
does not have an ohm meter or is unsure of the cable
specifications and layout.

You will need to set up a workstation with an EtherLink card as an
echo server, to echo test packets transmitted by the testing
server.  (Note:  Setting up a 3c505 as an echo server and running
the test from a 3c501 will give false-positive results for cabling
errors.)

After the echo server is set up, run the diagnostics from the
testing server and check the results.  If it passes, the cables
are fine.  If it doesn't, you probably have general cable
problems.  Check your card settings against the following lists.
