Title: Upgrading a DOS Basic Workstation With TCP Using Maint. Updates
Date: 3/11/91

When a DOS Basic workstation is created under 3+Open 1.1, there is
no NETPROG subdirectory, but when TCP 1.1 (or 1.0) is installed on
top of it, TCPSETUP creates and inserts its files into the NETPROG
subdirectory.

This setup runs fine, until you try and use the Maintenance Update
(1.1E or 1.1F) to upgrade your workstation. With 1.1F installed on
the server, the administrator will link to C$ and run NETSETUP.

The upgrade feature in NETSETUP will see the NETPROG subdirectory on the
Basic workstation, think it is really an Enhanced workstation, and
improperly run the upgrade as if it were an Enhanced workstation.

SYMPTOMS:

  * The update replaces the AUTOEXEC.BAT file for the Basic Netstation
with an AUTOEXEC.BAT file for an Enhanced Netstation.

  * The update copies Enhanced NET.EXE files into the NETPROG subdirectory
and makes corresponding changes to the PATH statement in AUTOEXEC.BAT
from C:\3OPEN\DOSWKSTA\LANMAN to C:\3OPEN\DOSWKSTA\LANMAN\NETPROG. When the
workstation boots, it tries to load the Enhanced NET.EXE instead of
the Basic NET.EXE. The following error message appears after Netbind:

Problem Starting Workstation -- Startup Aborted

  * Instead of the default NET START LIGHT-WKSTA (for a Basic workstation),
the update changes the startup to NET START WORKSTATION. If the user
continues after receiving the "Problem Starting Workstation" error and
attempts LOGON, the following errors will appear:

     LOG0002: Incorrect redirector version
LOG0026: 3+Open network operation did not complete

WORKAROUND:

1. Before running the 1.1E or 1.1F Maintenance Update, on the Basic
workstation copy the contents of the \3OPEN\DOSWKSTA\LANMAN\NETPROG
subdirectory to a temporary subdirectory. (For example, make a subdirectory
named TEMP and copy all NETPROG files to it).

2. Remove the NETPROG subdirectory.

3. Run the Maintenance Update.

4. Recreate the subdirectory NETPROG in the proper place and copy the files
back into it.

Note: If you have a utility to rename a subdirectory, use it to rename
NETPROG before the update, then rename it back to NETPROG after the update.

You will know if you are successful in updating the Basic workstation if the
AUTOEXEC.BAT still shows that it is for a "BASIC Netstation."
