A modem that is not Hayes V-series can communicate with a Hayes
V-series modem (and vice-versa) via Route Server-to-Route Server,
Remote Workstation-to-Route Server, or Remote Workstation-to-
Remote Server.

To do this, follow the steps below.

(Note: The following procedure was tested only on version 1.3.1
of 3+Route/Server, 3+Remote/Server, and 3+Remote User.)

1. Make sure that the server's ACP.SYS driver is dated
11/10/87. (Obtained from your installation #3 diskette)

2. On a server with a Hayes V-Series modem (or any high speed
modem) attached, increase the 3+Route receive buffers.

For example, with one Hayes V-Series attached to COM1:, the
receive buffers were increased to eight.

3. Configure the high-speed modem in the 3INS program as
    follows:

             Modem Type Hayes
             Baud Rate 9600
             Timeout 5

4. (For Hayes V-series V.42 modems only), connect the modem to a
PC workstation's COMM port and use a communications program
to send the following command string to the modem:

                       AT&Q5S36=1&W

This command string will reset the S36 register to 1, causing
the modem to attempt an asynchronous connection. This is
important because the Hayes V-Series V.42 modem automatically
attempts an error-control connection with the remote modem
using CCITT standard V.42 protocol. The new setting will be
stored in the modem's nonvolatile memory.

If the modem is not set correctly the following symptoms may
occur: When trying to connect via 3+Remote into a 3+Route or
3+Remote server the message "NETWORK ERROR" occurs, or when
using 3+Route between servers the message "SHARE SERVER NOT
RESPONDING" appears. The local modem will dial out and the
remote modem will answer, but a complete connection is not
made; acknowledge is never sent back so the lines will drop.
