Title: Locator Crashes When Internetworking Names Are Used
date: 12/5/89

Copyright 3Com Corporation, 1991. All rights reserved.

Networks running 3+Open or 3+ version 1.5 or below that are
using 3NB internetworked names may see the following problem:
servers or workstations running the Locator may hang and, if the
server hangs, other services on the server may also lock.

The situation occurs because the Locator does not handle the 3NB
Register and Clear commands correctly. The Locator keeps a timeout
queue with an entry for each registered node, sorted in order of
next timeout. If a station does not send a heartbeat, it will
eventually get to the end of the queue and be dropped. Internetworked
names (resulting from 3NB Register) are added to the queue but then
immediately removed because they do not have timeouts. Later, when
3NB Clear removes the internet name, the Locator tries to delete the
timeout queue entry again and may hang during another workstation's
heartbeat.

If your network has stations using 3NB internetworked names, use
a new version of Locator that fixes the problem and supports more
Locator names in its table. The new version of LOCATOR.EXE
(14976 bytes) is in the Ask3Com Forum, Patches and Fixes library.
