An experiment run with a concurrent PC server that was also a
Maxess gateway revealed that a concurrent server cannot handle
the demands of Locator along with Maxess TSRs, even when
parameters are increased to compensate for the increased
traffic.

The concurrent PC server was an Epson Equity III+ with a 3C503
adapter using shared memory, running 3+ Mail 1.3.1 and Locator.

The problem was discovered once the PC was in concurrent mode and
Maxess was loaded using the LOADGW program. Users were able to
connect to host, but when they tried to send mail, the Concurrent
PC server would lock up and the workstations displayed "Locator
not responding."

The problem was recreated on a dedicated PC that was redefined as
a concurrent server. 3+Mail and Locator were installed. The PC
booted and the Maxess gateway software was loaded without
problem. But, when another workstation was booted up, the
concurrent server locked up and the booting workstation displayed
"System error." Executing 3NB DIR caused the NetBIOS error x40
to display, indicating that Locator was not responding. If
Locator was put on another server on the LAN, the Maxess gateway
could be used without any problems.

The solution is to have Locator run on another server or
workstation.
