Supporting a network requires a great deal of knowledge about all the
parts of the network, from the cabling to the software applications.
If there is a problem on the network, it can be difficult to know what
information you need to solve it. Following are questions that 3Com
Technical Services uses to troubleshoot networks with 3Com dedicated
servers. You can use these questions to assist in your own troubleshooting
or when preparing to call 3Com Technical Services.

1. What is the rev level of the motherboard and memory card?

2. Is the SCSI bus terminated properly?

3. If the problem is with the hard drive, have you cleared CMOS?

4. What does running diagnostics tell you?

5. What size hard drive is in the server?

6. What rev PROM is on the disk controller card?

7. Have you run TAPETEST and 3DISK386?

8. Are there expansion units attached to the base unit?

9. Are you using internal or external transceivers?

10. What other adapters are installed in the AT slots (IBM, TokenLink,
AST 4-port)?

11. Can you establish a console connection to the server?

12. What happens when the server attempts to boot up in normal operation?

13. How much memory does the server have?

14. What devices are attached to the I/O ports?

15. How often does the error occur?

16. What was happening on the server when the failure occurred?

17. Obtain current configuration files from the server (CONFIG.SYS,
STARTUP.CMD, LANMAN.INI, PROTOCOL.INI, 3STARTUP.CMD).

18. What does LASTBOOT output?
