Supporting a network requires a great deal of knowledge about all the
parts of the network, from the cabling to the software applications.
If there is a problem on the network, it can be difficult to know what
information you need to solve it. Following are some questions that 3Com
Technical Services might use to troubleshoot networks with 3+Open Backup.
You can use these questions to assist in your own troubleshooting or
or when preparing to call 3Com Technical Services.

1. What version of 3+Open Backup is being used?

2. What version of LAN Manager is being used?

3. What protocol is being used on the Backup server?

4. What kind of server is the Backup server (3S/40x, 3S/50x, 3S/60x)?

5. What kind of tape drive is being used (Tandberg, Archive, Exabyte)?

6. Have you run TAPETEST?

7. Have you cleaned the tape head recently?

8. Have you tried a different tape?

9. What kind of tape cartridge is being used (3M, DEI, 150M, 250M, etc.)?

10. What are the error messages? How frequent are they, and where do they
come from (netstation, error log, server's LCD, 3BACKUP.ERx, etc.)

11. What command caused the error (BACKUP2, BACKMAN, 3BACKUP, AT
scheduler)?

12. Get configuration files from server (CONFIG.SYS, STARTUP.CMD,
LANMAN.INI, PROTOCOL.INI, 3STARTUP.CMD).

13. Has the server username (or the administrator's account) been logged
onto the network and does it have proper access to the tape drive?

14. Did you install the drive or did it come installed in the server?

15. Is the SCSI bus properly terminated?

16. If BACKUP2 fails, does BACKMAN (at the command line) work, or
vice versa?
