Many people are confused by the different commands for logging onto a
3+Open network. This article explains the differences and appropriate use
of the logon commands.

In 3+Open 1.1, LOGON and LOGON2 are used to log on to both a 3Com
three-part name service and 3+Open servers in a mixed network, saving you
from having to log on twice. LOGON is used from a DOS netstation. LOGON2
is used from an OS/2 workstation.

If you use the /3O switch, you are logged on only to a 3+Open network. If
you use the /3Plus switch, you are logged on only to a 3+ network. If you
use no switch, LOGON or LOGON2 attempts to log you on to both types of
networks, but if no 3Com three-part name service exists, you will see a
LOG0034 error, indicating that LOGON or LOGON2 could not log you on to a 3Com
three-part name service.

Following is an explanation of switches that can be used with LOGON and
LOGON2.

Usage: LOGON2 [user name] [[/PASS=]password(s) | *] [/switch(es)]

   Arguments:
user name - User name for 3+Open and 3+ networks
       password(s):
single password: used on both 3+Open and 3+
two passwords: first is for 3+Open, second is for 3+
       *                   - prompt for 3+Open and/or 3+ passwords
   Optional Switches:
       /HELP (?) - show help information
/NO_PRO (/NP) - do not use profile files
/YES (/Y) - cancel remote connections, no prompting
       /3OPEN (/3O) - only log on to 3+Open network
       /3PLUS (/3P or /3+) - only log on to 3+ network
/NO_TIME (/NT) - do not set local time from network time
       /PASS=<password> - use required with three-part 3+ usernames
       /HOME_SERVER=<computer name> (/HS) - for DOS start volumes only
       /SECURIY=<USER | SHARE> (/SE) - for DOS start volumes only

   Examples:
       LOGON2 JohnSmith Password
       LOGON2 JohnSmith 3OpenPassword 3PlusPassword /Y
       LOGON2 John Smith:Finance:My Company /PASS=3PlusPassword /3PLUS

NET LOGON is a LAN Manager logon command. On 3Com networks, do not use
NET LOGON to log on a workstation; use LOGON or LOGON2 instead. NET LOGON
can be used to log on a server as a user; for example, to perform a backup.

Note: There is also NETLOGON service, separate from the NET LOGON command.
NETLOGON service allows you to define a single batch file or a small number
of batch files that will be executed by users when they log on to the network,
if their workstations are configured to cooperate with the NETLOGON service.
NETLOGON service can only be used by OS/2 and DOS Enhanced workstations.

LOGIN and LOGIN2 are 3+ commands, NOT used to log on to a 3+Open network.
LOGIN is used from a DOS workstation. LOGIN2 is used from an OS/2
workstation.
