Q: Is the 3com Name-Binding system compatible in the lower levels
with the system Apple is using in their Apple-Share?

A: 3Com 3+ software does not implement the Apple Name
Binding Protocol (NBP). However, we should be compatible with
it--specifically, if a Mac is running a software product (like AppleShare)
that installs a protocol stack containing this protocol, 3+ will not
interfere with its operation.

h3;General Overview:
Name Binding Protocol (NBP) is AppleTalk's naming
protocol. On a Macintosh workstation, it executes as part of the .MPP
(lowest level AppleTalk) driver. See 'Inside AppleTalk' for the
details.

1. NBP is compatible in the sense that the 3+Mac driver does not
interfere with the use of the AppleTalk's NBP interface.

2. In the case of a Macintosh attached to LocalTalk (AppleTalk wiring
scheme), 3+Mac will use an NBP in order to locate a 3+NetConnect. If
you were to look at the packets on the wire when you used the Chooser DA
to choose 3+Mac you would see NBP LookUp packets looking for devices of
type "3NameGateWay".

3. 3+Mac uses the XNS based 3+ Name Service for Naming.
