Q: Why does the 3+ icon flicker every time I open a folder on my hard disk
in View by Name mode? It seems to do it once for each line
displayed. It doesn't seem to do it during Icon mode (except once at
beginning.) I'm running off my hard disk, with two network folders on-line
with 1.2.1B3.1.

A: What you see is the Finder making a desktop management call to
each of the network volumes that has desktop support for each of
the files in the folder. It passes the "Creator" (i.e., the ID
of the application that created the document) to the server and
wants back the name and location of the application so that it
can supply more than the generic "document" entry in the kind
column.

Many of the files in the System folder are not application documents and
therefore will cause an unsuccessful search of all volumes/Shared Folders.
