Apple has just released Version 6.0 of the Macintosh System Software.
This release has already gone out to all developers and Apple offices
worldwide in the standard American English version.

Please note that users who run switch launched off of a system folder on
the server will experience a misleading error message when updating Home
Folder system files to this new version. Here's the complete procedure
for installing this new software using a two floppy Mac - first to the
startup floppy, then to the Home Folder. This procedure presumes you
have obtained the official Apple system update kit, containing 4
floppies:

    - Macintosh System Tools, Version 6.0
    - Macintosh Printing Tools, Version 6.0
    - Macintosh Utilities: Disk 1, Version 6.0
    - Macintosh Utilities: Disk 2, Version 6.0

.h2;Updating the startup floppy:
The Apple Installer program automatically installs a whole host of
system files that the user does not need on their startup disk if they
switch-launch. What this means is that you can't run the Installer
against an existing 3+ startup floppy.

So, the easiest way to create a new boot disk for a user is to do the
following:

1. Make a copy of the "Macintosh System Tools, Version 6.0" diskette.

2. Double click on the Read Me file to learn a little about the new
system software - it contains some important information.

3. Using the copy (henceforth the "New Startup Master"), throw away:
        - Setup Folder
        - TeachText application
        - Read Me file

4. Open up the System Folder, and throw away everything EXCEPT System and
Finder.

5. Restart the Machine using the "New Startup Master".

6. Insert the disk "Macintosh Utilities Disk 2, Version 6.0" into the
second floppy drive. Start the Font/DA Mover application.

7. Use Font/DA Mover to delete ALL fonts EXCEPT:
        o Chicago 12
        o Geneva 9
        o Geneva 12
        o Monaco 9

(A shortcut is to select all the fonts and click remove, verify the
action, and click OK when the dialog comes up telling you that the fonts
listed above are reserved for system use and won't be deleted. All the
others will be.)

8. Use Font/DA Mover to delete ALL desk accessories EXCEPT and Chooser
and Control Panel.

9. Quit Font/DA Mover and eject the Utilities Disk 2. You now have a
bare minimum startup disk.

10. Copy into the system folder of the New Startup Master the files 3+File
and 3+Prep.

11. Copy onto the top level desktop of the New Startup Master the files
NetSwitch and NetSwitch MF.

12. Optional: install the MailMinder desk accessory. Put the
Utilities 2 disk in the second drive, run the Font/DA Mover, eject the
Utilities 2 disk, and insert the 3+ for Macintosh Mail disk to get
access to the desk accessory file. After installing MailMinder DA, quit
Font/DA Mover, and copy the MailMinder system file into the system
folder on the New Startup Master.

You now have a 3+ boot disk for use with LocalTalk. Make a copy of this
disk and give the copy a name like: 3+Mac LocalTalk Startup Master.

13. Reboot the Mac using the disk "Diagnostics and EtherTalk
Installer". Insert the New Startup Master into the second floppy drive
and install the EtherTalk driver.

You now have a 3+ boot disk for use with Mac II's on Ethernet. Make a
copy of this disk and give the copy a name like: "3+Mac Ethernet/Mac II
Startup Master".

14. Make copies of the "Startup Master" disks for each user. Copy the
user's 3+Prep file from their old startup disk into the system folder of
their new startup disk.

.h2;Updating the Home Folder:
1. Boot the Mac with the user's new startup disk. This presumes that
the user will be logged in and the Home Folder and other network folders
will be linked. Note that you will get an error saying that 3+Print
must be selected in order to link a printer. Remedy this by going back
to the Chooser, selecting 3+Print, linking the appropriate printer, and
re-saving the user's startup configuration.

2. Insert the "Macintosh System Tools, Version 6.0" disk into the
second floppy drive.

3. Open up the Setup Folder, then the Installer Scripts folder. You
will see scripts for Mac II, SE and Plus installation. Double-click on
the appropriate script. This causes the Installer program to launch.
Manipulate the selection buttons to select the System file in the System
Folder on the user's Home Folder.

4. Click Install. Here is where you get a misleading error message!

You will get an error message at the end of the installation process
saying "Error -19 updating the boot blocks." Click OK, and the
Installer will give you a message "Sorry, installation on "Home Folder"
failed."

However, THE INSTALLATION WAS SUCCESSFUL. The Installer has a bug - it
presumes that it will only be used on boot disks. Since the Home Folder
is not a boot disk, it has no boot blocks to be updated, hence the error
-19 message. The Installer message SHOULD say something like:
"Installation successful, however "Home Folder" can not be used as a
startup disk."

5. Now you can use the Utilities Disks to give
the user all the latest DA's and other goodies on their Home System
Folder. If they are going to printing to non-3+ printers, use the
Printing Tools disk to update their printer software.

6. If the user uses some DA's or other applications that have to be
loaded on system startup, copy these from the user's old boot floppy to
their new one.

7. Reset NetSwitch as the startup application. On the new startup
floppy, click on either NetSwitch or NetSwitch MF (depending) to select
it. Go to the Special menu of the Finder and choose Set Startup... Be
sure Finder is selected on the top half, NetSwitch on the bottom.

8. Restart the Mac using the new startup floppy, and everything should
work like a charm.
