Title: Upgrading an IB/2000 to a Bridging Router
Date: 1/24/90

Copyright 3Com Corporation, 1991. All rights reserved.

3Com has introduced a product line of bridging routers (brouters)
able to route XNS, TCP/IP, or OSI, and to bridge any protocol
because the bridging function is protocol-independent. You
can configure a brouter to route any combination of the above
protocols and bridge others.

Both the IB/2000 and the BR/2000 are based on the NETBuilder
product platform. Your IB/2000 can be upgraded to a BR/2000
by adding memory chips and changing EPROMs (as well as purchasing
the brouter software and manuals, available in March 1990.)

Newer IB/2000s are field upgradable, but older ones must be returned
to the factory for upgrade because they have no sockets for the
new memory chips.

To tell if you have a "new" or "old" IB/2000, look at the reset
switch on the front panel. If the switch is easily pushed with
your finger, it is an older IB/2000 and will have to be returned
for upgrade. If the reset switch is recessed and needs to be
pushed with a pencil, it is a newer IB/2000 and is field
upgradable.

Hardware upgrade kits are available for field upgradable units.
