The COMPACT utility relocates a hard disk's fragmented files
contiguously on the disk. To use the COMPACT utility, there are
several conditions that must be met:

1. Do not run COMPACT from the drive you want to reorganize.

2. Do not allow any other program or user to access the disk
while COMPACT is running. The disk may not be shared while
    COMPACT is running.

3. Do not allow disk-caching programs, such as FASTOPEN or
CACHE, to be active when COMPACT is running.

4. Make sure memory swapping is turned off before running
COMPACT. In the CONFIG.SYS file (or CONFIG.OS2 file, as
appropriate), make sure this line appears: MEMMAN=NOMOVE,
    NOSWAP.

The easiest way to fulfill all these conditions is to do the
following:

1. Copy COMPACT.EXE from your server's hard drive onto a
bootable OS/2 diskette (such as your OS/2 Installation
    diskette).

2. Boot the server with this diskette.

3. If you have just booted with the OS/2 Installation diskette,
when the OS/2 Install program's title page appears on the
screen, press ESCAPE to exit to an OS/2 command prompt.

4. Run COMPACT.
