Title: Server with LaserWriter Hangs Loading 3+Share
date: 6/22/90

A 3S/401 server was installed with 3+ 1.5, 3+Share, 3+Name, 3+ for
Macintosh, and 3+Netconnect services; an Apple LaserWriter NTX was
attached to the COM1 port. All services worked correctly.

One day, the customer shut down the server, using correct procedures.
When the server was powered on the next day, it hung with the message
"Loading 3+Share" on the LCD.

If the LaserWriter was powered off or if the printer cable was
removed from the port, the server would boot without errors. The printer
configuration was set correctly for Protocol 4 (XON/XOFF and hardware
handshake). The cable was correct. The LaserWriter could print from a
local machine.

The LaserWriter would never print out the "3Com 3Server" banner page upon
boot up. After the printer cable was detached, 3+Share was successfully
loaded, and the cable was reattached, users tried to print documents to
the LaserWriter, but would get only the banner page followed by an
"offending command" error message.

The problem was due to a corrupted LWSENSE file on the server. The
LWSENSE file does PostScript interaction. It queries the PostScript
printer to find out if it needs a dictionary. If it does, LWSENSE will
download the dictionary (LWPREP).

Normally, the LWSENSE file is 118 bytes long, but the corrupt version had
a length of zero bytes. To solve the problem, the LWSENSE file was copied
from the 3+ 1.3.1 File/Print diskette to the 3PLUS\3SHARE subdirectory. The
server was rebooted and the LaserWriter printed the "3Com 3Server" banner
page upon bootup. Afterwards, Macintosh users could print their jobs with
no problems.
