date: 8/1/89

There is a known software problem in one of the 3+Backup TAPETEST
procedures. When used on a Tandberg tape drive, the (q) Tape
System Function diagnostic check shows error 92 even though the
drive itself may be working correctly.

For example, during testing of a good Tandberg tape drive in a
3S/401, the error looked like this:

    (q) Tape System Functional diagnostics check

Warning: This test will destroy data on the media.
Do you want to continue? (y or n): Y

    RESETTING scsi bus

ISSUING DEVICE INITIALIZATION COMMANDS FOR TANDBERG HALF-
    HEIGHT

SCSI driver error: Unknown driver code = 92

This problem occurs when using 3+Backup diskette #2 part number
4560-01. It has been fixed on 3+Backup diskette #2 part number
4560-02.

RECOMMENDED TAPE TEST

This procedure duplicates the (q) Tape System function test.

1. Establish a console connection.

2. Insert 3+Backup 1.3.2 #2 diskette in drive A:.

    Use a 3M 600XTD or a 3M DC6150 tape to run the diagnostics.

3. At the A:>> prompt, type TAPETEST and press [Return].

4. For 3S/202 servers only, select vendor (current = 1).

5. Select controller address (current id = 0). For 3S/202
servers, set for SCSI = 7.

6. Reset SCSI bus.

7. Test unit ready.

8. Initialize controller using vendor description.

9. Erase tape.

10. Write (80 records).

11. Rewind to BOT.

12. Read/verify (80 records).

13. Space to end of recorded media.

14. Rewind to BOT.

QUICK TAPE TEST

This procedure will tell you if the tape will write and read.

If you receive any sense errors, perform the procedure more than
twice to determine if you have a bad drive.

1. Establish a console connection.

2. Insert 3+Backup 1.3.2 #2 diskette in drive A:.

    Use a 3M 600XTD or a 3M DC6150 tape to run the diagnostics.

3. At the A:>> prompt, type TAPETEST or TTST386 and press
    [Return].

4. Select (c) Reset SCSI bus.

5. Select (e) Initialize controller using vendor description.

6. Select (p) Write and read/verify loop (80 records).

To perform a stress level test, set the number of records to
400 and number of passes to 3. This will take approximately
    two to three hours.

If the drive passes diagnostics and you still have problems with
3+Backup, note the following information and contact 3Com
Technical Support.

1. What error messages do you get?

Provide a copy of the BACK_LOG.1 file.

2. What type of backup are you making when the error occurs (full
backup, append with full backup, incremental with full
    backup)?

3. Does the error occur on the first or second tape?
