Title: Warning Message About SHARE.EXE When Using DOS 4.0
date: 2/1/91

When formatting a workstation with partitions greater than 32 megabytes
using DOS 4.0, the following message may appear:

*** WARNING! SHARE should be loaded for large media. ***

The message is generated by the DOS BIOS when the system cannot find
SHARE.EXE. It has nothing to do with the 3Com product 3+Share.

SHARE.EXE is a terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) program used in the
DOS 4.0 environment to install optional file-sharing and file-locking
routines for networking. It allows use of partitions greater than 32
megabytes.

When SHARE.EXE is loaded properly, MS-DOS will check all read and write
requests for FCB access. FCB access to a partition with greater than 32
megabytes can cause random file corruption.

SHARE.EXE can be loaded through the CONFIG.SYS file using the INSTALL
command. If SHARE.EXE is not present and the fixed disk is partitioned to
a partition that is greater than 32 megabytes, MS-DOS will attempt to load
SHARE.EXE, searching the root directory and then the directory specified by
the SHELL statement in the CONFIG.SYS file. If SHARE.EXE connot be located,
MS-DOS will display the warning message.

After you see the warning message, check the path and CONFIG.SYS to determine
the execution path of SHARE.EXE. Then place SHARE.EXE in either the root
directory or in the directory that is accessible by the path.
