This article describes how to define reserved logical units (LUs)
in Maxess, to allow only one workstation access to a particular
LU. The procedures were tested on a Compaq 286 workstation
running Maxess 1.2.1 and 3+ 1.3.1 workstation software, with the
Maxess software in a shared directory on a 3S/201 server.

3Com documentation contains some information on defining LUs.
The SNA Gateway Administrator's Guide for 3+ 1.2.1 has some
information in chapter 3, pages 3-6 to 3-7, as does the SNA
Gateway 3270 User's Guide, chapter 3, page 3-8.

To define a reserved LU, some modifications must be made first to
the gateway:

1. Run LOADGW.BAT to download Maxess Gateway software onto the
    SDLC card.

2. Run GM (the Gateway Manager) to modify the Maxess Gateway
    configuration.

3. Choose the CONFIG option.

4. Press PGDN to get to the LU you want to define as reserved
    and modify the parameters.

For example, choose LU 6 and then select "yes" for reserved.
When "yes" is highlighted, press Return.

To restrict access to this LU by a particular workstation,
you need to add the workstation name on this screen. To find
out the workstation name needed, go to the workstation you
want to define and bring up a session. At the bottom of the
screen will be a Maxess-defined name such as M-3270.8Q7462.

5. Enter a password if required by your setup.

6. Save the changes.

7. Exit GM.

Next, modify the workstation program.

1. Load WCP (the workstation control program).

2. Choose the 3270 option.

3. Select SESSIONS.

4. Press PGDN to the session screen and enter the LU number that
    is reserved.

5. Save the change.

6. Exit WCP.

Once these changes are made you can bring up the gateway in
normal operation and access the sessions from the workstations.

If your workstation, assigned to a reserved LU, is actually in
that session and active and someone else tries to access it, they
will see the message "session busy." Type Alt-S for a new
session screen and the user will access the host.

If you are not accessing your reserved LU and someone else tries
to access it, they will see this message "session is not
configured" (meaning that the session is not configured for their
particular workstation). If the user types Alt-S and accesses a
new session, then they will connect to the host.

If you are working at the workstation with the reserved LU and
you select your session (for example, LU 6), you will get a
message on the screen that says "password required use start
session key." Press the + key to start the session. Then you
will see "enter password." Once you have entered the password,
you can then use your reserved session.
