This article describes errors that can occur if an Archive tape
drive is installed incorrectly in a 3S/401 server.

The errors were observed and diagnosed using this equipment:

    3+1.3.1 software and 3+Backup 1.3.2 software
    A 3S/401 server with a system rev level of 3600-01 rev A
    A Compaq 286 netstation running IBM DOS 3.3 with a 501 card
    Ethernet cabling
    A DC600XTD cartridge tape

DESCRIPTION OF ERRORS

1. Under 3Console connection the server is unable to do an off-
line backup. Running 3BMENDOS results in the error message:
"Tape Drive Error; drive not attached Press any key to
    continue"

Here are two possible causes and solutions.

Cause: Using System Software disk #1 3382-04
Solution: Use System Software disk #1 3382-05

Cause: Wrong SCSI address on Archive. SCSI address matches
      the hard drive.
Solution: Follow Tape Drive Release Note part no# 6321-00
and correctly set the SCSI ID jumper. (This release note
      ships with the Archive drive.)

2. Under 3Console connection, changing from drive A: to drive C:
causes the error message "Invalid Drive Specification"

Cause: The SCSI cable is plugged in the wrong way on the
      Archive tape drive.
Solution: Flip the SCSI cable over and plug the cable in
again. As you face the drive from the back, the red edge
of the SCSI cable should be on the left side of the Archive
      drive.

3. In normal boot mode the server LCD shows the message "Failure
reading hard disk+" If you press continue, the server
restarts the boot sequence, then redisplays the message.

Cause: The SCSI cable is plugged in the wrong way on the
      Archive tape drive.
Solution: Flip the SCSI cable over and plug the cable in
again. As you face the drive from the back, the red edge
of the SCSI cable should be on the left side of the Archive
      drive.

4. In normal boot mode a problem appears when you go into 3BMEN.
If you choose Identify tape you see the error message "Tape
Drive Error; drive not attached Press any key to continue"

(If you choose Backup you will not see an error. Pressing
Return through the backup options will bring you back to the
    3BMEN with no errors.)

Cause: Wrong SCSI address on Archive. SCSI address matches
      the hard drive.
Solution: Follow Tape Drive Release Note part no# 6321-00
and correctly set the SCSI ID jumper. (This release note
      ships with the Archive drive.)

EXCHANGING TANDBERG AND ARCHIVE TAPE DRIVES

Tandberg and Archive tape drives cannot be directly interchanged.
The screws that hold Tandberg drives in the server bracket are
metric; Archive screws are not. The SCSI cable from the system
SAE board on Tandberg drives is too short for Archive drives.
Also, pin 1 of the Archive SCSI cable is on the opposite side to
pin 1 of the Tandberg cable. The most current software driver,
which supports both the Tandberg and Archive tape units, is
REQUIRED for the Archive drive.

The Archive tape drive requires these version levels of software:

    3Server386 System Software #1 Version 1.3.1 3382-05
TAPE.SYS with file size 3552, dated 9/30/88 or later
    3+Backup #2 Version 1.3.2 4560-02
    TTST3.COM and TTST386.EXE, dated 9/88 or later

When changing between Tandberg and Archive drives be sure and run
Tapetest 3+Backup #2 Version 1.3.2 4560-02, TTST3.COM and
TTST386.EXE, dated 9/88 or later. When you run Tapetest select
the correct tape controller. Select Reset and then erase the
tape. Your server will now recognize the type of tape drive you
are using.
