Port Expansion Boards

Of the many and various AT port expansion boards we picked two
that seemed the most commonly available to test and support at
FCS. They are:

                AST - FourPort/DOS
                      (4 Serial RS232 ports)
                      $495 Suggested List Price
                IBM - PCAT Serial/Parallel Adapter
(1 Serial and 1 Parallel ports)
                      P/N 6450215
                      $150 Suggested List Price

The maximum tested and supported configuration (at FCS) is one of
each of the boards:

                3S/400 ------------------ 1 Parallel Port
                                          3 Serial Ports
                FourPort/DOS ------------ 4 Serial Ports
                Serial/Parallel Adapter - 1 Serial
                                          1 Parallel
                                          ----------------
                Total: 8 Serial Ports
                                          2 Parallel Ports

Network Expansion boards

Network Option boards included EtherLink II and TokenLink.
EtherLink II can be used with 3+NetConnect for Ethernet to
Ethernet intelligent routing. TokenLink can be used for Ethernet
to Token Ring intelligent routing with 3+NetConnect OR can be
easily configured as the primary network connection. The
limitation on configuration for intelligent routing is: Two
networks max can be supported with 3+NetConnect:

    Primary - Secondary
    -------------------
Ethernet (On-board) - Ethernet (EtherLink II)
Ethernet (On-board) - Token Ring (TokenLink)
Token Ring (TokenLink) - Token Ring (TokenLink)
    Later:
    Ethernet (On-board) - AppleTalk (On-board)
Token Ring (TokenLink) - AppleTalk (On-board)

    Primary
    -------
    Ethernet (On-board)
    Token Ring (TokenLink)

Other EtherLink and TokenLink 3Com adapters are not recommended.
The EtherLink II has multipacket buffering that is important in
the server environment. Intelligent 80186 based adapters
(EtherLink Plus and TokenLink Plus) will not add any performance
in the 386 Server environment. (11/30/87)
