Q: I tried to initiate 3+Backup on my server, but nothing
happened. I then did a STAT and it said "Backup in Progress,"
even though the tape was not moving. When I tried to cancel the
backup, I was then told that there was "No Backup in Progress."
What's happening?

A: You probably attempted the Backup before the server cleared
the "XTRA ???K" message from the LCD. You must wait at least
two minutes after CIOSYS loads before you can perform either a
BACKUP, RESTORE, or DIR /F. This is not a bug, but rather a
"feature" put into CIOSYS to prevent services from creating new
threads during initialization. Unfortunately, BACKUPs, RESTOREs,
and DIR /F operations (which all require borrowing CIOSYS
buffers) try to create another thread, which CIOSYS prevents
during its initialization phase. At this point, the only way
you can clear the condition is to reboot the server. Wait until
the "XTRA ???K" message disappears from the server LCD. Now, you
can retry the operation.
