Special steps are necessary when restoring a Name server from
tape. Usually the restore is necessary because a Name server
disk has become unusable. None of the network services,
including Backup and File, services, are usable without a
functioning Name service. Therefore, the first step towards
recovery is to install Name service on a server. When
configuring the new Name service, make sure that:

1. The server with the new name service has the same three-part
name as the old Name service.

2. The default domain is the same as the old one.

3. The default organization is the same as the old one.

4. The default network number is the value as the old one.

5. The "domain limit" is at least one larger than the actual
number of domains that existed before. For example, if you
had two domains, then no action is needed (the default
number of domains is 5, greater than 2). But, if you had 25
domains, you need to set the domain limit to 26.

After configuring the new Name service (and before starting the
server), change directory to C:\3PLUS\3NAME. In that directory
will be a file named NS_DOM.000. Rename this file to NS_DOM.xxx
where xxx represents the number of domains that existed on the
old Name service. Using our earlier example, if you had two
domains, this file would be renamed to NS_DOM.002 (your old
domains were named NS_DOM.000 and NS_DOM.001). If you had 25
domains, rename this file to NS_DOM.025.

Once the file has been renamed, start the Name server normally.
Perform the restore operation normally. When the restore
completes, and before trying to use any of the restored names,
shutdown the server and restart in DOS mode. Change directory to
C:\3PLUS\3NAME. There should now be all the old domain database
files present as well as the one you recently renamed. Delete
the file that you renamed, leaving only the restored ones.
Restart the server normally. The old Name service information
will now be available to network users.
