3Com Archive Tape Drive Release Note - Number 6321-00

Note: If the tape drive is going to be installed in a 3S/400 or a
386Upgrade, check the documentation that you received with your server.
If you are using 3+Open, or a version of 3+ later than 1.3.1,
the Archive tape drive may be documented in your server guide.
If this is the case, use the procedures in your server guide instead of
this release note, and discard the diskettes shipped with the tape drive:
they are not required.

This note lists the installation differences between the 150 MB Archive
tape drive, and the 150 MB Tandberg tape drive. The Tandberg tape
drive is documented in these manuals:

.br;3Server3 Tape Backup Guide
.br;3Server Expansion Unit Guide
.br;3Server386 Guide

.br;The differences are:
.br;SCSI ID jumper location and configuration
.br;Terminator location
.br;SCSI connector pin 1 location
.br;SAE screws instead of metric, to mount the tape drive in the bracket

A new System Software #1 diskette with a new tape driver, for both
Tandberg and Archive New tape backup diskettes (Tape Backup #1 and
Tape Backup #2)

The Archive uses the same parity jumper setting (installed or
removed), SCSI ID (0 or 7), and terminator configuration
(installed or removed) as the Tandberg. The Archive is shipped
with the parity jumper installed, SCSI ID = 0, and the terminators
removed. This is the proper configuration for installation in a 3Server386.

If your SCSI cable has double-sided tape that keeps it folded,
carefully pull it apart, to accommodate the location of pin 1
on the Archive drive. Arrange the SCSI cable as necessary to
avoid any damage. Be sure to keep cables from interfering with
the drive or the server enclosure.

Two files must be copied onto the server from the new System Software
#1 diskette: TDRIVE.SYS and TAPE.SYS. Establish a console
connection and copy the tape drivers to the root directory of the server.
If there is a directory named C:\DISKS\BACKUP1\DISKETTE, copy the
drivers into it, also. Reboot the server. Replace the old System
Software and tape backup diskettes with the new ones. Do not use the
old diskettes.

When using the Archive drive, put the cartridge in with the head opening
to the left. This is rotated 180 degrees compared to the other tape drives.

Remember to lock the tape cartridge into place by moving the head
loading lever, located on the front of the drive, to the right.
Eject the tape cartridge by moving the lever all the way to the left.
