.h3;3+Mail Version 1.3 and 3+Mail Minder Version 1.2.1
.h3;General Use Release Notes

This document includes general use release notes related to the 3+Mail
electronic mail service (version 1.3) for 3+ networks and the 3+Mail
Minder program (version 1.2.1). You should read this information
carefully before using your 3+Mail or 3+Mail Minder software.

These release notes are divided into two sections: General Use and
Error Messages.

Subheadings are provided within these sections to assist you in finding
information pertaining to your needs.

Where applicable, each note is accompanied by a manual title and page
reference. This reference indicates the manual and page containing
related information.

Guides referenced are:

.h2;General Use
.h3;File Return Receipt--3+Mail User Guide 4-15
The 3+Mail software specifies that anyone receiving a Return Receipt
message must acknowledge receiving it by opening it before they are
permitted to file it into a folder. The message may remain in your
inbox unread however, until you are ready to respond to it or read it.
All network users must have the same version of 3+Mail to ensure
compatibility on this issue.

Return Receipt messages cannot be read, filed, forwarded, responded to,
or printed without an acknowledgement. When a user attempts to access
an unacknowledged Return Receipt message, the following message is
displayed: "The sender of this message has requested a Return Receipt.
If you type 'y' an acknowledgement will be sent and the message
displayed. Type 'n' if you want to defer reading the message. (Y/N)?"

When the Return Receipt message is acknowledged, the sender of the mail
message is sent a RCPT (Return Receipt) acknowledgement. The RCPT
acknowledgement lists that your message was received (by its Subject
name), who read it (by the recipient's name:domain:organization), and
the date and time that it was read. This status information is sent
back to the sender. For example;"Your message of 12-29-87: 'Corporate
Financial Report 1987' was read by Sydney Fisher:SPD:3Com on 12-29-87 at
12:25 pm.

.h3;Internal Error -492--3+Mail User Guide 3-4
This applies only to 386 netstations within a LinkPlus Optimizer
environment. An internal software error can cause the message "Not a
group (Error -492)" to be displayed on screen when searching for names
within the 3+Share Name service using the 3+Mail [F9] key.

Searching through other domains or organizations for a specific name or
group name can also cause this internal error message to be displayed on
386 netstations within a LinkPlus Optimizer environment.

.h3;File Sharing Message
In situations where two netstations attempt to share the same folder, a
message indicating file sharing status is displayed. The 3+Mail program
will allow the first user to open the folder with read/write access.
3+Mail allows only one netstation to have full access rights to that
shared folder at one time. The second netstation attempting to access
this folder will get the error message "problem opening folder directory
file." 3+Mail will then terminate this operation.

.h3;Mouse Driver Notes--README2.DOC File
A sample mouse menu program has been included with 3+Mail, version 1.3.
It is intended for use with a MicroSoft two-button mouse, but may work
with other mouse types providing that they are MicroSoft compatible.
The README2.DOC file is included on the 3+Mail User #2 diskette, and
explains the mouse driver.

Both the mouse definition file (MAILMS.DEF) and the "translated" code
(MAILMS.MNU) file have been provided. These files assist in getting
started and are supplied without any expressed warranty. You may add to
the definition file or modify it in any way to add additional
functionality.

.h3;Message Header Fields--3+Mail User Guide 3-1
When typing information into the "To:" or "cc:" message header fields
in 3+Mail, be sure that you do not end these fields with a comma. If a
comma is placed at the end of either of these message fields, the
message recipient receives a message with a blank subject field in the
main folder inbox.

If you use MED or any other text editor program to edit the message
header fields, be sure that you follow the proper naming convention
(name:domain:organization) and include all colons.

.h3;Editing .MFI Files--3+Mail Guide Appendix B
3+Mail automatically creates a MAIL.MFI file the first time you create
a new folder, and tracks your subdirectories so you can open a folder
without having to specify a path. MAIL.MFI is the default name of your
folder's file, and contains information about all of your folders as
well as some parameters that you can change to suit your needs. 3+Mail
allows you to use a text editor or the mail editor, MED, to edit this
file to change any desired parameters. Reference Appendix B of the
3+Mail User Guide for details.

.h3;Remote Notes--3+Remote PC User Guide 3-6
All references to 3+Mail creating a file called MAIL.DIR in your
directory should be changed to FOLDER.DIR. The function of this file
is unchanged by 3+Mail and is a name change only. FOLDER.DIR is the
file created by 3+Mail version 1.3, that resides in your directory and
is used to keep track of messages in your mail folder. The function of
FOLDER.DIR is identical to that performed by the file previously named
MAIL.DIR.

.h3;3+Remote PC User Guide 2-6
All references to a workstation in this manual should now refer to a
netstation. The term netstation describes any intelligent workstation
or personal computer used on a network, and should be substituted for
clarity of description. Any description that pertains to 3+Mail or the
remote use of 3+Mail implies the use of a network service shared between
netstations.

.h3;Attachment Limitations--3+Mail User Guide 3-13
The 3+Mail User Guide, and the 3+Mail MAILHELP.HLP file both refer to
25 as the maximum number of attachments that can be sent with a mail
message.

.h3;Specifying Attachments--3+Mail User Guide 3-13
While you can send any DOS file as an attachment, you must be sure to
properly specify how this is done. When typing in the filename located
in your inbox directory, always remember to properly specify its
directory or path, then press [Return]. For example: E: \*.msg

Improperly specifying the directory or path of attachments, or
exceeding the allowable number of attachments, or trying to attach
already open files can cause general failure errors to occur. When
sending attachments with a mail message, remember that 25 attachments is
the maximum number that can be sent with any one mail message.

.h3;Viewing Binary Attachments--3+Mail User Guide 3-13
An error condition can occur when viewing binary attachments that you
send to yourself. This involves sending yourself a message that
includes a large .COM file in the Attach: message header field. When
you retrieve this message and view it using the 3+Mail [F2] key, and
then scroll through the file using the [PgDn] key, 3+Mail may hang.

.h3;Lotus 1-2-3 Version 1A Compatibility
Users of Lotus 1-2-3 Version 1A, who have a CGA- or EGA-compatible
display adapter, may occasionally experience a problem when using
3+Mail. This can occur when the command line parameter is set to
(/displaytype=b,d, or e), which makes 3+Mail run in color, but can also
cause the top menu line in 3+Mail to disappear.

If this problem occurs, the "mode co88" DOS command should be issued
after exiting Lotus 1-2-3, and before running 3+Mail. This problem does
not occur on monochrome systems, or on Lotus 1-2-3 version 2 or later.

.h3;Using the Locate Feature--3+Mail User Guide 4-10
The Locate function on 3+Mail's pull-down menu allows for searching
through mail messages by sender, subject, or specific text references.
The Locate feature, however, will only search for and locate these
specified items on messages after the current highlighted message in the
list. It does not perform the search on the highlighted message itself.

For example, if you are at message number 15, the Locate feature will
begin searching for a match in the field you specified at message number
16. Message number 15 will not be searched for a matching field.
Remember to start any Locate search at the first message in your folder.

If you need to locate a match within a field in the very first message
in your folder, simply cursor up to the first message in your folder and
forward (F7) the first message to yourself. Retrieve (F8) this copy of
the message you just sent to yourself. This process moves a copy of the
very first message in the folder down to the bottom of the list where it
can be successfully searched.

.h3;Using the F5 File Option--3+Mail User Guide Appendix A and C
Pressing the 3+Mail F5 key allows you to file your messages to
different folders or inboxes. However, when doing a DIR of a diskette
that is currently in drive A or B and you physically change this
diskette, and use the F5 key to file the message or attachment to a new
diskette in drive A or B, you receive this error message "Cannot open
file <name>." See Appendix A of the 3+Mail User Guide for the exact
meaning and action of this message.

To prevent this after you physically switch the diskettes, press the
[/] key and exit to DOS when you switch diskettes, and then do another
DIR of this diskette and reenter 3+Mail.

.h3;Using the Include Option--3+Mail User Guide 2-2 and Appendix B
If you attempt to include a file that is too large to be handled by the
MED or any other text editor, 3+Mail can cause the following error
message to be displayed: "File is too big to paste into Editor - press
[Return] to continue." Including another file at this point may cause
3+Mail to hang because of a buffer limitation in the text editor.

Instead of including another file after the error message is displayed,
you should save this file and then send it. You can then continue
without halting 3+Mail.

.h3;Folder Name Extension Error
Your folder name must not contain an extension within it. For example
using "Myung.box" will cause the following error message to be
displayed: "Problem filing message. Check if folder drive is ready."

.h3;Filing Marked Messages to a Filename--3+Mail User Guide 4-4
You cannot file a marked message to a filename. 3+Mail always expects
a directory name when you use the File [F5] function key on a marked
message or messages. Attempting this will cause the error message
"Problem accessing source file <name> " to be displayed.

.h3;3+Mail Minder Status Window /Row Parameter--3+Mail User Guide Appendix B
The 3+Mail Minder status window will not wrap around when a large row
number is specified in the /Row command parameter. If you press the
display status window keys before starting 3+Mail and the /Row command
parameter is set to equal 43 (/Row=43), the keyboard will lock up
without displaying the status window. This parameter affects the row on
your netstation screen where you want the top row of the 3+Mail Minder
status window to display.

This failure of the status window to wrap around will not occur,
however, when the /Col command parameter is set to equal a larger
number. If you specify a /Row parameter greater than 25, a common range
value, be aware that this affects where the status window is displayed.
Press the [Esc] key to restore control of the status window. If
desired, change this /Row command parameter within 3+Mail Minder.

.h3;International Character Recognition Error--3+Mail User Guide Appendix B
3+Mail 1.3 will not properly handle the International character set in
the Mail message header fields. The International character set
contains ASCII values above 128. The Mail message header fields include
the To:, cc:, Subj:, and Attach: lines. Using International characters
in the text portion of a message will work properly. Some problems
associated with using the International character set include:

1. You will not be able to send mail to users with names having
International characters, even if they are valid registered users in the
Name service.

2. You cannot copy names with International characters from the Name
service F9-choices list.

Messages from clients with older versions (3+Mail 1.1 or 1.2.1) are
still received properly. But you will have problems forwarding or
replying to messages that contain International characters in any
message header field.

Work arounds: Sending mail to users with names that have International
characters requires that you alias them in your Name service with names
that do not contain International characters. For example; "Bjrn" would
become "Bjorn".

Using the Name service look-up function to transfer names from the
F9-choices list to the message header fields requires that you select an
alias name without any International characters.

.h3;Duplicate Mail Messages
Users on large networks with distribution lists in excess of 100 names
may experience the receipt of duplicate mail messages (depending upon
the configuration of their Name service).

.h2;3+Mail Error Messages
.h3;3+Mail User Guide, Appendix A

The message: DOS paths may not be used as folder names.

Meaning: You specified the entire pathname or tried to add the pathname
of a new folder when naming it.

Action: Type only the new folder name, as it is not necessary to
specify the pathname. Specify the title of the new folder, and 3+Mail
will pick a path for you.

The message: Problem opening temporary file.

Meaning: When closing a folder, usually to Quit Mail, you could not
open a temporary file to write the FOLDER.DIR.

Action: Check your netstation's memory, as you may be out of disk space
or your drive may not be ready to use.

The message: User not registered for 3+Mail service.

Meaning: In 3N, the person you are sending mail to on the network was
not assigned a 3+Mail server.

Action: The network administrator needs to register this user as an
entry on the 3+Mail server.

The message: Problem filing the message. Check if folder drive is ready.

Meaning: The retrieve operation failed.

Action: The network administrator must perform a force unlink
procedure.

.h3;3+Mail Minder Error Messages

The message: User not logged in.

Meaning: You have not logged in to the 3+ network.

Action: Log in to the 3+ network then try 3+ Mail Minder again. 3+Mail
Minder uses information that is transferred to your netstation when you
log in to the 3+ network.

The message: Server not responding

Meaning: Your 3+Mail server is not responding. The network
administrator may have temporarily halted the mail server on the network
or you may be using 3+Mail Minder on a netstation that requires use of
the ATT6300.COM program. ATT6300.COM is not required on an IBM PC or
Compaq PC netstation. It is needed only on an AT&T 6300 or 6300+.

Action: Contact the network administrator. If the mail server has not
been halted on your network, then restart your netstation and load
ATT6300.COM prior to loading MMINDER.EXE.

The message: *** 3+Mail Minder requires a 3+Mail Server 1.0.1 or greater

Meaning: Your 3+Mail server has not been upgraded to support requests
made by the 3+Mail Minder program.

Action: Contact the the network administrator, and have the mail server
upgraded.

The message: Needs server r 1.0.1

Meaning: Your 3+Mail server has not been upgraded to support requests
made by the 3+Mail Minder program.

Action: Contact your network administrator, and have the mail server
upgraded.

The message: McFork Failed or Network error (1, 0, 6)

Meaning: The 3+Mail Minder tried to check your mail server, but could
not due to the settings that were provided in the CONFIG.SYS file on
your 3+ Netstation Startup diskette.

Action: If you have modified the parameters to the PRO.SYS entry in
your CONFIG.SYS file, you may have to modify them to support 3+Mail
Minder on your netstation.

To view the contents of your CONFIG.SYS file:

1. Insert your 3+ Netstation Startup diskette or 3+Remote Netstation
Startup diskette in drive A:

2. Type:

 A>TYPE A:CONFIG.SYS

If you have not changed your CONFIG.SYS file, it should look like this:

device = pro.sys 8 20 2 <-- PRO.SYS parameters
device = buf.sys
device = eth.sys
device = idp.sys
device = spp.sys
device = lgl.sys
device = rip.sys
buffers = 6
files = 20
lastdrive = e

To use 3+Mail Minder, it is not necessary to edit your CONFIG.SYS file
or the PRO.SYS parameters it contained when shipped.
