If your mailbox is stored on a 3+Mac server, rather than on a local hard
disk, you can increase performance somewhat if you give your mailbox(es)
a name which is a valid DOS name. In particular, the current default
name is "3+ Mailbox", which is not a valid DOS name. Renaming it to
"Mailbox" will speed up Mail slightly because of lower overhead on the
file server. Note that the same naming rules apply to folders in which
you mailbox is located, so that if your mailbox is not in the root of
your Home Folder, renaming the folders which contain it to have valid
DOS 8.3 names, or just moving your mailbox out to the root, will improve
performance, too.
