.h2;3+Mail Installation--3+ Installation and Configuration E-1
To install 3+Mail version 1.3, the network administrator will install
either two 5.25-inch or one 3.5-inch 3+Mail User Software diskettes on
the network. The choice of diskette sizes depends upon the type of
netstation that installation will take place on.

For installation you need the following:

netstation connected to the 3+ network
  3+ Adminstrator's Guide
  3+ Netstation Startup diskette
  3+Mail User #1 and #2 diskettes.

3+Mail user software program files are listed as follows; the 5.25-inch
3+Mail User #1 diskette contains:

File Name Description
MUINSTAL.BAT 3+Mail installation program
MAIL.EXE 3+Mail program
MED.EXE Message editor program
3M.EXE 3+Mail administrator commands program
MMINDER.EXE Mail Minder program
MSREDIR.EXE Redirector program
ATT6300.COM 3+Mail Minder program used on AT&T 6300 netstations
(AT&T netstation users must load this program before
                    using 3+Mail Minder)
README1.DOC 3+Mail user instructions

The 5.25-inch 3+Mail User #2 diskette contains:

File Name Description
MUINSTAL.BAT 3+Mail installation program
MAILHELP.HLP 3+Mail Help text file
README2.DOC Mouse driver instructions
MAILMS.MNU MicroSoft Mouse driver program
MAILMS.DEF Mouse menu definition file

NOTE: The single 3.5-inch 3+Mail User diskette contains all of these
files on one diskette, but is labeled as 3+Mail User #1 and #2
diskettes.

There are three ways to install the 3+Mail user software diskettes:

1. By installing the two 3+Mail software diskettes in a shared
directory.

2. By installing the two 3+Mail diskettes on a netstation's hard disk.

3. By installing the two 3+Mail diskettes on a diskette.

.h2;Installing on a Shared Directory
1. Make the shared directory APPS, drive D:, the current drive. This is
where general network applications programs reside.

2. Insert the 3+Mail User #1 software diskette in drive A: (if you are
on a netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the diskette labeled
3+Mail User #1 and User #2 software diskettes.)

3. Start the user software installation program by typing: D:>A:muinstal

4. Follow the screen prompts and insert the 3+Mail User #2 diskette when
requested (applies only to installing the 5.25-inch diskettes).

5. When the DOS prompt returns, the 3+Mail User software is installed.
Remove the 3+Mail User diskette from drive A: and store all your 3+Mail
diskettes in a safe place. All necessary files have been copied.

Note: An updated copy of the MSREDIR.EXE file has been copied to your
shared directory. Be sure that this copy of MSREDIR.EXE is now loaded
when you start up your netstation.

.h3;Installing on a Netstation's Hard Disk--3+ Installation and Configuration Guide E-1
1. Make sure that the hard disk has been formatted using the DOS 3.1
FORMAT command. If the netstation is to start from the hard disk, you
must use the /S option.

Caution: If you have been using the hard disk with an earlier version
of DOS, be sure you copy the files on the hard disk to diskette or tape
before you reformat the hard disk. The FORMAT command erases the entire
hard disk.

2. Start up the netstation.

3. Make the hard disk the current drive; drive C.

4. Insert the 3+Mail User #1 software diskette in drive A. (If you are
using a netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the 3+Mail User #1
and User #2 software diskette.)

5. Start the user software installation program by typing: C:>A:muinstal

Follow the screen prompts and insert 3+Mail User #2 software diskette
in drive A: (applies only to 5.25-inch diskettes). A screen message
will alert you if the diskette currently in drive A: is not the correct
diskette. For example: The diskette currently in drive A:, is NOT the
3+Mail User #2 diskette.

6. When the DOS prompt returns, the 3+Mail User software is installed.
Remove the 3+Mail User diskette from drive A: and store all your 3+Mail
diskettes in a safe place. All necessary files have been copied.

Note: An updated copy of the MSREDIR.EXE file has been copied to your
hard disk. Be sure that this copy of MSREDIR.EXE is now loaded when you
start up your netstation.

.h3;Installing on a Diskette--3+ Installation and Configuration Guide E-1
To install 3+Mail user software on a diskette, use a netstation that
has two diskette drives. Not all of the files for 3+Mail 1.3 will fit
on one 5.25-inch diskette. To run mail from a diskette you will need
only these four basic files; MAIL.EXE, MED.EXE, MMINDER.EXE, and
MAILHELP.HLP.

1. Start the netstation with DOS 3.1 or later.

2. Place a blank, formatted diskette in drive B.

3. Insert the single 3+Mail User #1 diskette in drive A. (If you are
using a netstation with 3.5-inch disk drives, insert the 3+Mail User #1
and User #2 software diskette.)

4. Make A the current drive.

5. Manually copy the required files onto your disk as follows:

 COPY MAIL.EXE B:
 COPY MED.EXE B:
 COPY MMINDER.EXE B:

If you are using a AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+, you must also copy this
file:

 COPY ATT6300.COM B:

6. Replace the 3+Mail User #1 diskette in drive A with 3+Mail User #2
diskette, and manually copy the file onto your disk as follows:

 COPY MAILHELP.HLP B:

7. The 3+Mail user software is now installed. Remove the 3+Mail User
diskette from drive A and store all your 3+Mail diskettes in a safe
place.

.h3;3+Mail Minder Installation--3+Mail User Guide 1-4, Appendix B
The 3+Mail Minder 1.2.1 Installation Instructions are for the network
administrator who installs the 3+Mail Minder software program. 3+ Mail
Minder checks the status of pending mail for 3Com's 3+Mail electronic
mail system, and provides a window on your netstation's screen with the
status of any pending mail.

Once 3+Mail Minder is loaded into your netstation, you need only press
a key (or sequence of keys) to check the status of your pending mail, no
matter which program is running.

3+Mail Minder is loaded into your netstation's memory when you start
your 3+ netstation and remains there until you turn it off. 3+Mail
Minder checks the status of your pending mail even if you are using
other programs like 3+Menus, Lotus 1-2-3, or word processor applications
like MS Word or Word Perfect.

You instruct 3+Mail Minder when to check the status of your pending
mail. If you have mail waiting at your mail server for delivery to your
inbox, 3+Mail Minder sounds a tone or displays a status window notifying
you that you have mail waiting. You can set 3+Mail Minder to check on
pending mail every minute if you are expecting an important mail
message, or every 30 minutes to an hour during normal use.

To modify or view the current 3+Mail Minder settings, you should refer
to Appendix B of the 3+Mail User Guide.

.h3;3+Mail Minder--Upgrading Version 1.0 Mail Servers
If you have 3+Mail servers with version 1.0 on your network, you will
need to upgrade them. This release of 3+Mail includes the most recent
version of 3+Mail Server (version 1.3). The network administrator can
install this new version of 3+Mail Server using the instructions
included below.

If this software upgrade is not made, and network users attempt to use
3+Mail Minder, they will get the following warning message when they
load 3+Mail Minder:

 ***3+Mail Minder requires a 3+Mail Server 1.0.1 or greater

3+Mail Minder will load even if the mail server has not been upgraded.
But, when checking the status of mail, the Mail Minder status window
will display the following message: Needs server r 1.0.1

NOTE: Only Version 1.0 mail servers already on your network need to be
upgraded.

.h3;Installing 3+Mail Minder
The 3+Mail Minder program is copied when the 3+Mail User #1 software
diskette is installed by running the MUINSTAL.BAT file. No other
installation procedure is necessary by the network administrator. For a
listing of specific files installed during 3+Mail installation,
reference the 3+Mail installation procedures in this document.

.h3;3+Mail Minder Compatibility
Some incompatibility exists between different versions of the 3+Mail
Minder program which can cause some netstations to lockup under certain
conditions. In other words, different versions of 3+Mail Minder should
not be run while one version is already active. In particular, in a
LinkPlus Optimizer environment if the user installs version 1.2.1 of
3+Mail Minder, then they should not later run a different version (like
version 1.1.2 of 3+Mail Minder).

3+Mail Minder maintains a memory map when it is initially loaded so
that when parameter modifications are made by the user, only those
parameter changes will be reloaded into memory. 3+Mail Minder tracks
exactly how long its program and data segments are. So when a new or
different version of this program is loaded on top of the old version,
some of the new data segments will overwrite the existing program
segments in memory and cause the netstation to lockup.

.h3;3+Mail Minder--Editing AUTOEXEC.BAT
Most 3+Mail Minder users will want to automatically load the 3+Mail
Minder program into their netstation's memory when they startup their
netstation. To automatically load the 3+Mail Minder program, you must
edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file on the 3+ Netstation Startup diskette or the
3+Remote Netstation Startup diskette.

Use a text editor to add the following entry in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file: MMINDER

If 3+Mail Minder is run on an AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+ netstation, enter
the following in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

 ATT6300
 MMINDER

For 3+Mail Minder to work properly, it must be loaded in your
netstation's memory in the proper sequence. The general rule to follow
is that you should load 3+Mail Minder immediately after the 3+LOGIN
program and before you load other terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR)
programs like Sidekick and the 3+Menus program.

Table 1 describes the recommended order that 3+Mail Minder should be
loaded into your netstation's memory. This order includes examples of
other popular terminate-and-stay-resident programs.

 Table 1. Loading 3+Mail Minder
Program Description Mail Minder should be loaded
 LOGIN.EXE 3+LOGIN program After

                                                       KEY.COM Borland
 SuperKey After/before

                                      LIGHT.COM Turbo Lightning
 After/before

                                            SK.COM* SideKick Before
 setup

                                    MENUS.EXE 3+Menus Before

 * Remember that the 3+Mail Minder status window will not display when
you are running a netstation program requiring graphics mode.

CAUTION: Some terminate-and-stay-resident (TSR) programs may not have
been developed using the same standard that was used by 3Com Corporation
to develop 3+Mail Minder. Hence, they may not coexist well with 3+Mail
Minder when they are loaded prior to loading 3+Mail Minder.

As a general rule, 3Com recommends loading 3+Mail Minder after the
LOGIN.EXE program and before other terminate-and-stay-resident programs.
If incompatibilities do exist, try to identify the problem program by
changing the order in which the programs are loaded; this often corrects
incompatibilities.

NOTE: The 3+Mail Minder program does not automatically log you into
the network. You must run the LOGIN program before you can use 3+Mail
Minder. If you use 3+Mail Minder without having first logged in to the
host network, 3+Mail Minder will display "User not logged in" in the
status window.

REMOTE USER NOTE: 3+Mail Minder will automatically dial your host 3+
network if you have dialed in previously and have dropped the telephone
connection. Providing you do not power down your remote netstation,
3+Mail Minder will continue to dial your network.

3+Mail Minder displays help information along with the current
preferences used to check your mail. If you do not wish to have this
information displayed, you can instruct 3+Mail Minder to load in memory
without displaying status or help information by typing: MMINDER > NULL

If you intend to modify existing default parameters after loading
3+Mail Minder, see "Customizing the 3+Mail Minder Program". For example
in modifying two command line default parameters, /Key and /Beep, type:

 MMINDER/Key={ALT}M /Beep=ON

.h3;Starting 3+Mail Minder
You start 3+Mail Minder by loading the Mail Minder program into your
netstation's memory, where it resides until you power off the
netstation. 3+Mail Minder uses approximately 7Kb of your netstation's
memory. The only difference between starting 3+Mail Minder (included as
a file on the 3+Mail software) as a local user versus a remote user is
the differences between the startup diskettes.

.h3;Local Users
1. Start your netstation using the 3+ Netstation Startup diskette. Log
in to the network.

2. Link drive D: to the APPS directory.

3. If you are using an AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+ netstation, type: D:ATT6300

Users with an AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+ netstations should check to
ensure that during installation of the 3+Mail user software diskettes,
the ATT6300.COM file has been copied.

The ATT6300.COM file is not required on any IBM PC, Compaq, or any
other PC-compatible type netstations. It is only needed on the AT&T
6300 and 6300+ netstations to enable them to use the 3+Mail Minder
program.

4. Type: D:MMINDER

3+Mail Minder will load in memory and display the current default
settings for the user configurable parameters.

.h3;Remote Users--3+Mail User Guide 2-4
1. Start your netstation with your 3+Remote Netstation Startup diskette.

2. Run the 3+ LOGIN program. If you are not logged in when 3+Mail
Minder executes, 3+Mail Minder will still load and the error message
"user not logged in" will appear.

3. If you are using an AT&T 6300 or AT&T 6300+ netstation type: ATT6300

4. To start 3+Mail Minder type: MMINDER

.h3;Working with the 3+Mail Minder Program
After 3+Mail Minder program is loaded into the memory of your
netstation, it immediately begins to check the status of pending mail on
your mail server. How often 3+Mail Minder checks the status of your
pending mail is based on the value of the current parameters.

If you want to change the value of one or more of the default
parameters, refer to "Customizing the 3+Mail Minder Program" in Appendix
B of the 3+Mail User Guide.

.h3;Automatic Notification of Pending Mail
The 3+Mail Minder program will check your mail server on a specific
time schedule. When 3+Mail Minder checks your mail server, and if you
have any pending mail (mail not yet retrieved), then 3+Mail Minder
displays the 3+Mail Minder status window.

NOTE: 3+Mail Minder will not display when you are running a netstation
program that requires graphics mode (for example, Reflex: The Analyst
from Borland International). 3+Mail Minder automatically detects when
your netstation is in graphics mode and will not display.

When your netstation is no longer in graphics mode, 3+Mail Minder will
return to normal operation and automatically display. 3+Mail Minder
will, however, sound a tone when you are in graphics mode if you have
Beep=ON. If you run a program that requires a graphics capability,
pressing the [Alt]+[left arrow]+[M] keys (or any customized sequence you
set) will still not display 3+Mail Minder.

.h3;Checking Pending Mail Status Between Scheduled Intervals
You can check the status of any pending mail at any time and while
running any program simply by pressing the following keys: Alt-left arrow-M

This is the default key sequence for invoking the mail status check.
To modify this sequence, see the Customizing the Mail Minder section of
this document. If you are using 3+Mail Minder from a netstation running
3+Remote, 3+Mail Minder will automatically redial your network and check
the status of your mail messages if you have performed the following
steps:

* Started your netstation with a 3+Remote Netstation Startup diskette.

* Logged in to the network at some time during your remote session.

When you press the Alt-left arrow-M keys, the 3+Mail Minder status
window appears.

By displaying the 3+Mail Minder status window, the program
automatically checks the status of pending mail on your mail server. If
you have new mail, the status message area displays "You have mail." If
you do not have any mail pending, the status message area displays "No
Mail."

From the 3+Mail Minder status window, you can take several actions:

* Pressing the [Esc] key causes the 3+Mail Minder status window to be
removed from the screen.

* Typing C asks 3+Mail Minder to check the status of your mail messages
again.

* Typing B toggles the value of the /BEEP status indicator.

When the status indicator displays /BEEP=ON, the 3+Mail Minder will
automatically beep when it detects mail messages as pop up window
appears. When /BEEP=OFF displays, 3+Mail Minder will not beep even if
mail is pending. Each time you press B, 3+Mail Minder toggles the value
of the /BEEP= status indicator. Typing A toggles the value of the /AUTO
status indicator.

When the status indicator displays /AUTO=ON, the 3+Mail Minder will
automatically display the 3+Mail Minder status window when it detects
new mail. When /AUTO=OFF displays, 3+Mail Minder will not display the
status window even if mail is pending.

To display the status window, you must press the default key sequence,
or the customized key sequence. Each time you press A, 3+Mail Minder
toggles the value of the /AUTO status indicator.

.h3;Customizing the 3+Mail Minder Program
When working with 3+Mail Minder, you may want to modify the default
parameters that have been provided by the program. With 3+Mail Minder,
you may update one or more of the following parameters as often as you
like. You can also provide your own default parameters when you first
start 3+Mail Minder.

.h3;Setting your own parameters
You set parameters by using command line switches that update the
in-memory table maintained by the 3+Mail Minder program. You can set
one or all of these parameters at the same time by using the command
line switches. When you start 3+Mail Minder without specifying command
line switches, 3+Mail Minder uses its default parameter values.

Each command line switch gives a specific instruction to tell the
3+Mail Minder program how to set a parameter value. For example, to
tell 3+Mail Minder that you want the display status window keys to be
Alt-M instead of the default Alt-left arrow or left shift-M, you
would type: MMINDER /Key={Alt}M

NOTE: When the [Alt] or [Ctrl] keys are used as part of a command line
flag, they must be enclosed in {}'s. All normal character keys are
entered without these {}'s.

You set all parameters at the same time following the example below:

 MMINDER /Key={Alt}M /Rate=1 /Tone=200 /Row=1 /Col=1 /Beep=On /Auto=Off

Each time you run MMINDER followed by one or more parameters, the
in-memory table is updated. Table 2 lists each command line parameter
and its valid range of values.

.h3;Viewing Current 3+Mail Minder Settings
To view the current 3+Mail Minder settings, run 3+Mail Minder again.
At the DOS prompt type: MMINDER

3+Mail Minder will display the current value of its settings and a
short help screen that describes how to set your own 3+Mail Minder
settings.

NOTE: Running 3+Mail Minder a second time does not use additional
memory.
