Title: Known Problems Installing Software on a 3S/400 Server

This article describes known problems that may occur when
installing software across the network to a 3S/400 (a server with
no tape drive).

The following problems were duplicated on a freshly initialized
3S/400 server and 3+ 1.3.1 software. The software was installed
across the network from a 3S/401 server (with a tape unit) to the
3S/400 server, using the standard materials that come with the
server.

Problem with 3+Backup

3+Backup may consider an aborted process still in progress and it
will refuse to accept any new backup or restore commands. This
occurs when no tape has been inserted before the backup program
is run or when trying to use 3+Backup after the server is first
booted.

To work around this known problem, reset the server and wait a
few minutes before reinstalling.

Documentation Errors

1. Step 7 on page 2-25 of the 3+ Tape Installation Guide has the
user enter the 3B RESTORE command to transfer the 3+ software
from the server with the tape drive over the network to the
new server. The step erroneously says that the system prompt
will reappear AFTER the 3+ files are transferred. Actually,
the prompt appears immediately after the command is issued.
This can lead the user to believe that no transfer has
occurred. However, the progress and successful completion of
the transfer process can be observed by examining the
messages on the LCD of the server with the tape drive.

2. Step 7 on page 2-29 of the 3+ Tape Installation Guide is
wrong. Instead of telling the user to set the mode switch,
it should refer to the thumbwheel switch.

The documentation errors will be fixed in the next revision of
the manual.

Problem with 3OPT

When 3OPT is run to save the CIOSYS parameters, it reports that a
file is missing. This happens when 3OPT.EXE, instead of
3OPT.BAT, is in the root directory. 3OPT.EXE must be run from
3PLUS\3CONFIG. 3OPT.BAT changes directories to 3PLUS\3CONFIG,
calls 3OPT.EXE, and changes directories back to the root when
3OPT.EXE is done.

How 3OPT.EXE gets into the root directory is currently being
investigated. The master tape shows that 3OPT.EXE is correctly
installed in 3PLUS\3CONFIG.
