After upgrading to 3+ 1.3.1, error messages were seen on both the
3Server3 with Apple LaserWriter Plus and the 3Server386 with Apple
LaserWriter II NT. The printers were configured this way:

   Port: Com1: Printer Server cable
   PostScript: Y 1 ------------ 1
   Form type: 1 2 ------------ 3
   Banners: N 3 ------------ 2
   Eject pages: N 5 \___________20 DTR
   Laserjet form: 0 6 /
   Baud rate: 9600 20 __________/ 5 CTS
   Protocol: 4 \ 6 DSR
   Retries: 10 7 ------------ 7
   Buffer size: 512
   Interrupt level: 0

These messages appeared randomly during printing:

%%[ ExitServer: permanent state may be changed ]%%
%%[ Error: VMeror; OffendingCommand: array ]%%
   %%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: P ]%%
%%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: SLL ]%%

Actually, the ExitServer message merely indicates a change in the
server's condition. After a print operation in which the user has changed
the normal status of the printer, the printer may behave differently,
requiring the operator to shut the printer off and back on again to restore
the default settings. The ExitServer message often appears when using an
application with its own printer prep driver, such as PageMaker with Aldus
Prep.

For example, when you print from PageMaker, it will first download Aldus
Prep into the printer to give it more features than are provided by the
regular Laser Prep driver. Then, PageMaker downloads the PostScript job.
When the job has finished printing, the ExitServer message is displayed to
indicate that the normal status of the laser has probably been changed.
This may also explain other error messages you get.

To avoid seeing the ExitServer message, you can upgrade to 3+ 1.5 or above.

Or, go into PageMaker's Print Setup menu and select Apple Prep as the
printer prep driver.
