Section 3.0 - Disclaimers and Miscellaneous

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Section 1.0 -- Frequently Asked Questions
1.1 - What's the purpose of this FAQ file?
    The alt.scottish.clans Clan/Surname FAQ provides a listing of
    Scottish Clan organizations and the surnames that each
    organization recognizes as eligible for membership.  Only those
    organizations giving permission to be included are represented in
    this FAQ.
1.2 - Why was this FAQ created?
    This FAQ file was created in response to the "my name is ______,
    what clan am I in?" type questions that are asked from time to time
    in the newsgroup.  Rather than answer each request separately, it
    seemed to be a good idea to provide the information in an FAQ.
    If you've ever been to one of the Scottish Games and/or Festivals,
    you know that usually some of the Clans have tents where
    information is available about their organization.  Most of the
    time there will be a sign outside the tent, listing which names
    "belong" to that clan.  This helps people who previously did not
    know of any links to Scottish ancestors discover if, just maybe,
    they might be a part of that Clan.  Many people (myself included)
    found out about their possible Scottish roots by walking by the
    Clan tents!
1.3 - What information is provided for each organization?
    The official name of each organization is given, the list of
    surnames that the group recognizes as (potentially) eligible for
    membership, additional brief information that may be significant,
    and the address(es) where you can contact the organization for more
    information and/or request membership.
    As you will see from the list, some organizations call themselves
    'Clan', some use 'Society', some use 'Association', and others
    combine several terms.  In the FAQ 'organization' or 'group' is
    used most of the time when referring to them in general.
    The surnames that are associated with a particular Clan are
    referred to in many places as the 'septs' of that Clan.  A sept is
    a branch of a clan that owes allegiance to the clan chief, or is
    related to and/or associated with the main clan in some fashion.
    Some organizations listed here prefer not to use the term 'sept',
    which is why this list is not called the Clan/Sept FAQ.
1.4 - Are these all the Clans? (or: Why isn't Clan ____ included?)
    No group is included in this list without one of its officers or
    other representatives first giving approval.  Under no
    circumstances will names, addresses, and in some cases phone
    numbers of individuals be listed without first getting permission
    to do so.  Permission is obtained from those reasonably believed to
    have authority to grant such permission on behalf of the
    organization.
    The consequence of this is that each group must be contacted to
    request permission.  Most of the time this has to be done via snail
    mail, which takes a while.  Also while some organizations advertise
    their existence, others do not.  So getting authorization can be a
    long process.  Right now the list is expected to grow in the future
    as more groups are contacted.  (They would be contacted faster, but
    the FAQ Maintainer does have to go to work once in a while. :-)
    So the lack of a particular organization does not indicate a vile
    plot to suppress that Clan.  It only means that the Maintainer
    hasn't gotten permission to include them yet.  If you do not find
    the name you're looking for, try to search the FAQ again in a month
    or two -- then the group you're looking for might have been
    included.
1.5 - How can I find my surname in this huge list?
    The best way I can suggest to you is that you use whatever tool you
    used to access this list.  Some kind of "search" function is
    available on just about every newsreader or Web broswer.  If yours
    doesn't (or you don't know how to use it) I suggest saving the FAQ
    and using a word processor to search.  Either way, use the search
    to look for the name you want to find.  [Do NOT write to the FAQ
    Maintainer to ask how you should use your software!  I can answer
    that question right now -- RTFM.]  In the worst case, just read
    each group's listing for the name.  The names are in alphabetical
    order within each group.
    Some hints: while each organization was requested to send as
    complete a list of surnames as possible, some groups have very long
    lists which make including every possible spelling variation of
    names impossible.  So if you don't find the exact spelling, try
    looking for a slightly different spelling.  Most groups are not
    extremely picky about the exact spelling of your name -- although
    some are!  If your exact spelling isn't listed but a variant
    spelling is, contact the organization to see if you can still join.
    A special note regarding "Mac", "Mc", and "M'" prefixed names:
    while some groups submitted lists that specified each different
    variation on these, most groups just listed them under "Mac" with a
    note that "Mc" was equally acceptable.  (No surname that was not
    specifically listed by the organization was included.)  So try
    searching for the name without the prefix at all, and you'll
    probably find it.
    Also note that most groups allow you to join based on your
    ancestors -- so look up your mother's and grandmother's maiden
    names as well.  Try looking up the surnames of relatives even
    further back if you know about them.  Most groups will recognize
    your ancestors' surnames, usually without requiring documented
    proof of descent.  Some groups _do_ require proof of descent
    however, and this is noted under the 'Additional Info' section for
    those groups (when known).
    Last, do not stop at the first place you find the name you're
    interested in.  It may be listed under more than one organization.
1.6 - Why did I find the same name under more than one organization?
    Short answer: because more than one organization recognizes that
    name for membership.
    You really want to know *why* more than one group recognizes it,
    don't you?  (*sigh*)  There are two main reasons, both of which are
    way beyond the scope of this FAQ.  First: the history of Scotland
    and the Clans doesn't make for an easy assignment of "this name
    goes in that clan."  A typical clan could not only be regarded as
    consisting of blood relatives of the Clan Chief, but also families
    that were allied/affiliated with the Chief.  And over the course of
    time, these alliances would shift, and people would get moved from
    place to place.  Also at various times in Scottish history some
    surnames were banned, which means that people were forced to change
    names; sometimes after the bans were lifted some would change their
    names back and some would not.  Some of today's organizations
    recognize only blood ties, others recognize the allied families,
    and still others recognize surnames that were associated with the
    geographical area that was ruled over by the Chief.  So with
    different groups using different criteria, some overlap will exist.
    (As will be immediately recognized by those with more knowledge of
    these topics, this explanation is a gross oversimplification of
    a complex history.)
    Second: some Clans are represented by more than one organization.
    From the information provided to the FAQ Maintainer, some groups
    are affiliated to varying degrees with each other; other groups
    seem to be competing against each other.  All groups who have
    responded are included in the list, with the info they provided.
    (Some groups actually asked that another group not be permitted to
    claim certain names.  No editing of that sort was done, but in some
    cases a note was inserted into the "Additional Info" section of the
    group disputing the others' claim.)
1.7 - How does this help me trace my roots?
    In and of itself, this list should be considered to be of no value
    in tracing your ancestors.  That is to say, finding your surname in
    a Clan listing is not guaranteed proof that Scottish blood flows
    through your veins.  The purpose of the list is to help provide
    information about membership in today's Scottish Clan organizations,
    not to help you search out your family tree.
    Having said that, this list is not a bad place to start, though.
    Many, if not most, organizations have Clan Genealogists that can
    help members research their Scottish roots.  Some groups have or
    are in the process of computerizing their records, as well.
    Contact the appropriate group for more information on this subject.
    Also, readers of alt.scottish.clans have shown a great willingness
    to help answer these questions if they can.  Your best bet, though,
    for researching your family tree is the soc.genealogy.* newsgroups.
    They were created specifically for that purpose, and you'll be more
    likely to find helpful info there.
1.8 - How should I contact the group?
    For all groups the minimum that is listed is a regular postal
    address ("snail mail").  Also whenever an email address was supplied
    with the other information, that is listed as well.  Phone and/or
    fax numbers may be available; if you do decide to call, *please* be
    polite and take into consideration time zones.  Don't expect someone
    you call to take an hour to explain all of Scotland to you (that
    would take a lifetime, anyway).
    Do mention that you're contacting them because you found the
    information on the Internet's Clan/Surname list.  Some groups were
    somewhat dubious about really getting much response via this FAQ,
    so let them know they made a wise choice.
    Where multiple addresses are given, the country each address is in is
    listed; where no country is given the country is the USA.  No slight
    is intended to those of other countries, it is just that the original
    FAQ maintainer's primary sources of contacts were in the USA.  Note
    that whenever an address in Scotland is given, it is listed first.
    This is simply appropriate.
1.9 - How current and accurate is this information?
    It's very difficult to say.  The Maintainer has tried to faithfully
    gather the information provided by the Clan organizations (there's
    bound to be a typo or two in here *somewhere*, though).  The lists
    of surnames do not change very often, I'm sure.  But organizations
    change officers, people move to new addresses, etc.  The contact
    information will change with time.  The hope is to keep the list as
    up-to-date as possible.  If your attempts to contact a group fail,
    please send an email to the current Keeper of the FAQ and an
    attempt will be made to get updated info.  [Don't send frantic
    emails to the Maintainer every time an email request to a group
    bounces, or if you don't get an answer to your snail mail within
    two days.  It will just cause you to be ignored.]
1.10 - What sources were used in creating the list?
    All information was provided by the organizations themselves.  No
    other published or unpublished list, book, or article was used (or
    even looked at) for the compilation of this FAQ.  Doing anything
    like that would have violated the authors' copyright, and great
    care was taken to ensure that nothing even close to that was done.
    Of course, the groups themselves may have used various sources,
    including published works, in deciding which surnames they would
    recognize for membership.  This FAQ is just passing on the
    information provided.
1.11 - Why does this book/pamphlet/list/post I've seen have different
       names for Clan 'X' than this FAQ?
    Please remember that this list is a list of names that are
    (potentially) eligible for MEMBERSHIP in a Clan organization.
    Each organization uses its own criteria as to which names to include.
    Some are restricted to a single surname; others recognize surnames
    associated with entire geographical regions of Scotland.  It's kind
    of a mixed bag.
    Books, on the other hand, tend to be much more focused, and their
    information is more "historically accurate."  Most Clan groups
    are more interested in attending festivals/games and celebrating
    our Scottish heritage, rather than fighting over who belonged to
    which Clan in the year 1173.
1.12 - Where can I get this FAQ?
    This FAQ is posted on or about the 16th of each month to the
    alt.scottish.clans, alt.answers, & news.answers newsgroups.
    The FAQ can also be accessed via the World Wide Web at address:
    http://www.smartpages.com/bngfaqs/alt/scottish/clans/top.html
    or via anonymous ftp at: rtfm.mit.edu in directory
    /pub/usenet-by-group/alt.scottish.clans
    At both www and ftp sites, the FAQ is divided into the same
    three sections as are posted. (It should be the only files
    available in those particular directories.)  Both sites are
    updated with the most recent version of the FAQ when the files
    are posted each month.
    ***** NOTE: The WWW site listed above is apparently having some
    problems in getting the monthly updates.  The FTP site is more
    likely to have the most recent copy.  Try there first!
1.13 - I found a mistake!  How do I get it fixed?
    The current 'Keeper of the FAQ' is James Oney (joney@iac.net).
    (I've referred to the FAQ Maintainer in the third person up 'til
    now, not to be haughty but to make any future maintainer's editing
    job easier.)  Please drop me an email.  I'll check your reported
    error against the information the organizations provided to me,
    and if it checks out I'll correct the mistake for the next posting.
Additional Info:
Clan Chattan, The Confederation of Clans, is one of the organizations that is
difficult to adequately describe in this FAQ format.  Suffice it to say that
(judging from the limited info provided to the FAQ Maintainer) the Clan
Chattan has ties to many other recognized Clans, and recognizes those Clans'
surnames for membership in Clan Chattan as well.
