     cassettes, videos, CD-ROMs, computer-mediated communication,
videoconferencing, virtual classrooms, and 'home experiment kits'
(e.g. chemistry labs and rock samples to explore in your kitchen,
build-it-yourself robots, etc.). Over 100,000 undergraduates are
currently enrolled, as well as over 150,000 Continuing Education
students (the former study for a B.A. degree, whereas the latter just
take isolated courses). There are no entrance requirements, but
strict standards are maintained by external examiners from other
universities who assist with the assessment of final examinations.
More than 2,000,000 people have now studied with the OU in one or
other of its programmes. Approximately 30,000 students each year are
involved with courses that have a home computing element, and this
number is about to rise dramatically.

ROGERS STATE COLLEGE (rsc)

Rogers State College (RSC) is a visionary state supported community
college located in Claremore, OK. RSC has been increasingly offering
distance learning opportunities over the last 10 years, initially
through TV, and most recently based on interactive TV and wide-area
     computer services support.

The typical distance learning paradigm used at RSC includes
presentations on broadcast, cable, or video tape, specially selected
texts, detailed study guides, course computer software in the hands
of students, and student-instructor interaction through wide-area
computer services. RSC currently has four degree programs which can
be completely accomplished using this paradigm: business, computer
science, humanities, and liberal arts. Course delivery will soon be
offered using CD-ROM and the Internet World-Wide-Web.

The initial scope of RSC distance learning was local to N.E.
Oklahoma, but has been U.S.-wide for the past two years, and will
     soon be global.

It is very significant that RSC faculty, staff, and administration
have been prepared for distance learning activities, through
workshops and other training sessions; and also very significant that
all RSC executives and academic directors, and most RSC faculty
members are computer literate, and familiar with distance learning
     and wide-area computer services.

SUNSET PARK RESTORATION (sunset)

New York, USA. Restoration is an all-volunteer organization that has
won national acclaim in areas of leadership training, land-use
planning, community organizing and problem solving. The Virtual
College project is an evolving effort that brings together
community-minded individuals, from around the world, to examine and
attempt to solve local problems. We use the form of an imaginary
college to provide structure and shape for our discussions.
Participants in this project may apply to function as: students,
e-profs or trustees. Although we compile student grade transcripts,
course credits are not transferable to any institution of higher
learning. At the start of each semester, participants are invited to
submit suggested course topics. E-profs, our version of professors,
act more as moderators and resource people rather than as discussion
leaders. Courses generate approximately 20 to 40 postings a week and
last for about eight weeks. It is our hope to use today's latest
communication technology - the Internet, to empower people in their
communities (at home, at school or at work).
