             For me, I use hardware and software and I would recommend the 
 following 
  
 Ableton Live (sample and HD recording with inbuilt FX) 
  
 Absynth 2 (softsynth with excellent sounds / capabilities) 
  
 Reaktor (build your own softsynths, fairly processor intensive) 
  
 Kontakt (sample softsynth, extensive sample manipulation) 
  
 Reason 2 (Multirack softsynth with plug ins, FX and a few nice little 
 extras) 
  
 Rebirth ( 2 X TB 303, TR 808, TR 909 emulation in one package) 
  
 Paul
