 Not everyone in the USA. Most stations carried on through to season 26. 
 You are probably in a minority. 
  
 Anyway, there was no gradual change although not much of the TARDIS 
 interior was seen towards the end of the series. The sets were so 
 battered and old that they were destroyed and the final TARDIS interiror 
 scene (Battlefield) was shot against drapes with roundels painted on 
 (that's why the scene is low light).
