Of course those who think you can produce something new would argue it's
been done before when P Davinson's Dr sacrificed himself to save Perry.
But there are only so many "emotions" which can drive the event of
regeneration. We've had so many now that you have to repeat the emotional
drive.
Never mind the plot, actors always go on about "motivation". They want to
know what is driving the charecters to do what they are doing. If would
appear that all too many complaining have no such interest.
