I think you missed the point. RTD has agreed that Eccleston is the 9th
Doctor simpy because he is the 9th actor to be associated with the part as
far as the general public is concerned. He has *not* stated, or even hinted,
that the McGann version regenerated into the Eccleston version.
This being the first series from BBC Wales, Eccleston could in fact be the
1st Doctor. In fact, RTD may decide that the restriction of 12 regenerations
is not relevant to his version of Dr Who.
We as fans of the 'classic' series are making assumptions that this new
series is simply a continuation of it. In general, RTD is neither confirming
nor denying our assumptions. He's left such things suitably vague.
