I think this may be a question of semantics.
If you were stripped naked, placed in the stocks in your town and
everyone came to jeer at you and throw rotten vegetables at you, I think
what you would be experiencing would be "shame". What other word can you
think would be more appropriate? Or has your imagination failed you?
