I don't think people take care of their hearing properly, so that's
quite a serious concern, actually. Particularly as many of us are living
longer.
Apart from the obvious issues about being able to hear what people say
to you, progressive loss of hearing has a negative effect on cognition.
It's obviously hard to tell what's causative and what's correlation, but
this gives some explanation of why retaining good hearing might be
important to help resist the effects of vascular dementia and Alzheimer's:
