The police will demand the details as if they have the legal power
to compel them, without actually stating that they do. If the person
is misled into thinking that they must answer, the police will treat
this as the person having "volunteered" the information.
I guess that if they instead replied "what law states that I must
provide this information?" they may admit there is none, and would
then pretty much have to accept a refusal. But the police are adept
at shouting at people to intimidate them so it may be difficult.
