 It's usually expressed as "heavens forfend" and an early use of it may 
 be found in Act 1 of Shakespeare's "Troilus And Cressida". 
  
 I'm sure it was also used by Rumpole in at least one of the stories (but 
 Horace was much given to quoting the classics).
