XPost: gnu.misc.discussDate: Tue, 7 Sep 2004 04:07:03 -0700 (PDT) Subject: GNUbies September 8, 2004 - Sam Hiser Sorry this is so terribly late. I was waiting to hear from our speaker. (Please note security procedures below) We are pleased to announce that Sam Hiser will once again be speaking at GNUbies tomorrow night, that is Wednesday September 8, 2004. As you may recall he has given presentations on OpenOfffice.org in the past. And this will undoubtedly be part of his talk this Wednesday night - that is TOMORROW night. The final title for the talk was never confirmed, but he will be talking about both OpenOffice.org and the desktop. He has said he would demonstrate Sun's GNU/Linux desktop -- called the Java Desktop System -- in context of Sun's overall Java branding strategy and introduce some of the new features in the new OpenOffice2 (beta), including the new database module called OpenOffice "Base". And one of the titles he sugested was "Free Software for the Enterprise: Sun's Java Desktop System in Context." Please bear in mind thouh that this was not finalized and that OpenOffice.org will be discussed as well. *********************************************** Sam Hiser, co-author of "Exploring Linux with the Java Desktop System" (O'Reilly Media), is a GNU/Linux consultant based in New York City. He was consultant to Sun Microsystems and Marketing Project Lead of the OpenOffice.org development project through its 20-millionth download. Hiser now contributes to JDShelp.org, a community site providing support and resources to users of the Java Desktop System. He is a Contributing Editor of LinuxWorld Magazine and writes on information technology for The Economist and other publications. He holds an MBA from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University and lives with his wife and daughter in Manhattan. *********************************************** Date: Wednesday, Sept 8, 2004 Time: 6:30-7:00 General Q&A 7:00 Sam Hiser Free Software for the Enterprise: Sun's Java Desktop System in Context Location: The IBM Building 590 Madison Avenue (57th Street and Madison Avenue) (note security procedures for admittance to the building below) After the meeting you can join us and speak further with our speaker at a nearby Pub/Restaurant.
