There are three things you've missed. First, local groups (such as nyc.*) are for posting by locals. If you're offering garage door rollers or whatever, you're supposed to be a local organization. Toronto is not "local" to NYC (New York City). Try the misc.forsale groups instead. Second, having said that, *.forsale groups are generally for non-commercial postings. They're the Internet equivalent of classified ads, not billboards. You seem to be posting for a garage door company, so you don't qualify. Third, posts to usenet are supposed to contain an actual post, not just a link to some webpage somewhere. One of your posts was just a link and a "Thank You", while the other contained more text, but was still basically just a reference to an eBay auction. So yes, you are wrong, but at least you were nice about it. :) I would refer you to the FAQ for this newsgroup, but I haven't seen it recently.
