Check the charter before advertising in ANY group - no matter what the group's topic and your product. The exception is that advertising is welcome in newsgroups that end in ".marketplace". Someone who has been on the 'net for a long time should know that. What you did was advertise where it is not permitted - unsolicited advertisements sent to someone's email address are spam, this is no better than that.
