| Subj: Unnecessary Construction - PARKS DEPT. C |
XPost: nyc.general, nyc.politics, talk.environment From: liberty@once.net A few years ago I posted here regarding what appeared to be unnecessary construction work on the New York City Parks Department's Ocean Parkway Malls in Brooklyn. This involved many months of work reconstructing benches, fences, paved and grass-covered areas, bicycle paths, etc. Residents were inconvenienced by the loss of the use of these areas, noise and pollution from machinery, and the loss of the many parking spaces adjacent to these malls. The cost was of course paid by us, the taxpayers. My objection to all this was that the fences, benches, and everything else DID NOT NEED this work. They were in generally good shape and THE SAME WORK HAD BEEN DONE ABOUT THREE YEARS PREVIOUSLY! Guess what? Now, about three years later, with these areas still in good condition, THEY ARE DOING IT ALL OVER AGAIN! The signs give the contract number as B065-103M, and the contractor is a local Brooklyn company. This is not all that smells rotten in Brooklyn. Every so often a "tree service" comes around that seems far less concerned with the health of the trees on the Ocean Parkway Malls as in harvesting as much wood pulp as possible from them. Some once beautiful, fully-foliaged trees have been pruned until they are sparse and browning, even in early summer. A few have died and been cut down, ground to wood chips on the spot, as are all the prunings this tree service takes. This demands investigation! --- SoupGate-Win32 v1.05 * Origin: you cannot sedate... all the things you hate (1:229/2) |
