 Try Agent, downloadable from www.forteinc.com. It will work 
 indefinitely for nothing in "Free Agent mode", and give you a 30-day 
 trial of the full version, after which you can either revert to Free 
 Agent or pay $29. I think it is probably the best for text groups, 
 although heavy users of binaries (which Google doesn't have) may want 
 something more specialised. 
  
 You will also need a news server account. If your ISP does not provide 
 one, or if the one it provides isn't very good (which is quite likely) 
 have a look at http://news.individual.net (no binaries).
