You would look in storage.conf (but if you don't know the answer,
probably you are using tradspool!).

Right, if the articles expired from INN, they are gone and you
will not find them anywhere on the server.
If you still have the articles in your client, then it is not
impossible to recover them (although it may be more trouble than
you want to take).
You would need to investigate what format your client saves the
articles as (perhaps it can save or export them in a plaintext
format), and then figure out a way to convert those to one
article per file.
