There's a bit more to it than that.
Google are getting commercial benefit from newsgroups without even
acknowledging the fact openly. Many of their users have the impression
that all of the groups accessible via Google's interface are 'web forums'
owned and operated by Google, and Google do nothing to correct that error.
The Google interface makes it difficult for newbies to post and respond in
a way that conforms to usenet customs and standards, so that following
threads they are involved in can become confusing and laborious.
Too many of the questions asked in techy groups by people posting from
Google are expressed in ways that are bound to annoy the old-timers, and
indicate ignorance of the ways of usenet. Some people just don't want to
have to deal with those posts.
