This problem is actually a function of the particular Web browser that
you're using, and is not inherent in Mac OS X. I think Safari uses that
error message because much of its functionality *does* in fact come from
an engine buried in Mac OS X, and that engine can't handle "news:" URLs.
Other browsers don't work that way, because they don't use the Safari
engine.
For example, Internet Explorer will by default fire up Outlook Express (if
you have it installed) when you enter a "news:" URL, and tell OE to go to
the specfied group.
Netscape Communicator has newsgroup functionality built in, so it can
handle "news:" URLs all by itself.
I don't think Firefox can handle them, at least not yet.
