 For the "Big 8" hierarchies, in which group creation is supervised by the 
 moderators of news.announce.newgroups, see the news.announce.newgroups 
 archive at . Some 
 very old Big-8 groups predate the charter system, though. 
  
 For other hierarchies, there may be an official source for each hierarchy 
 (most likely not).  You can also look at the control-message archive at 
  but it also won't have groups 
 older than some date.
